Robert Gsellman continued to prove he’s too good for the Florida State League Monday afternoon, using all three of his pitches to keep Palm Beach scoreless until they hit a solo homerun off of him with two outs in the 6th. He has now allowed 1 ER or less in 6 of his 7 starts this year, and only 2 ER in his other start. He finished the 7th inning for a 3rd straight start, and just kept getting better as the start went on. Also, both times that Gsellman has faced Palm Beach, he has induced 3 groundball double plays. The Mets matched up against one of the top prospect in the Cardinals system, but weren’t overmatched by the tough lefty. Dom Smith hit a one-out double off of him in the 2nd, but was stranded there. The first three runners reached in the 4th inning to start a 3-run rally: Conforto was hit in the back, Oberste doubled him to 3B, and Smith singled them both home (with the help of a throwing error). Smith eventually came home on a sac fly from Phil Evans. Jhoan Urena provided an insurance run in the 9th, leading off with a single, then moving to 2B on a Plaia groundout, before scoring on a 2-out single from Ruiz. Josh Smoker needed just 7 pitches to strike out two in a perfect 8th – he had a high ERA with Savannah, but appears to be getting back into game shape now. Akeel Morris made things interesting with two two-out walks in the 9th, but he’d strikeout Carson Kelly (the batter who had homered) to end the game.

Yesterday: L 3-1 (Savannah, Lexington)
Today: W 4-3, Reyes (W, 3-3, 3.56 ERA) – 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 4 SO, 92 Pitches (62 Strikes), 12 GO: 2 FO

3B – Eudor Garcia – 1-2, R, 2 BB, SB (1)
DH – Jon Leroux – 0-3, R, BB, 2 SO
LF – Vicente Lupo – 0-3, 3 SO
C – Tyler Moore – 0-2, R, RBI (1), BB
Bullpen:
Ricky Knapp (3.18 ERA) 1 IP, 1 GO: 2 FO
David Roseboom (S, 2, 1.86 ERA) – 1 IP, H, 2 SO

The Sand Gnats used a big four-run 5th inning to come back and win the opener against Augusta Monday night. Savannah starter Scarlyn Reyes got in trouble early, allowing a two-spot in the 1st inning when he couldn’t get the third out – Augusta picked up consecutive two-out RBI hits to take a 2-0 lead. Reyes would allow an extra base hit in each of the first three innings, but worked around the runner in the 2nd and 3rd innings. But a one-out walk would come back to burn Reyes in the 4th when J.C. threw what would’ve been the 3rd out away for a fielding error. The Gnats bats had been put down in order in each of the first 4 innings, but Wuilmer Becerra broke the seal to get the rally started in the 5th with a two-out single. Augusta would walk in the first Gnats run of the night, and then John Johnson picked up a two-run single to tie the game. They would take the lead on another bases loaded walk, and then the pitching shut Augusta down for the rest of the game.

Minors MVP of the Day – Been hoping to give this to Dominic Smith recently, and tonight there isn't much competition, so I'm happy to give him the nod. He's still homerless in 2015, but he's really turned it on the past 10 days.
Minors Cy of the Day – Robert Gsellman has been a beast so far this year, and was one out away from 7 shutout innings Monday afternoon - can't wait to start watching him with Bingo in the 2nd half.
