The St. Lucie Mets got some strong pitching from Robert Whalen and a pair of 4-run innings to double up on the best team in the FSL (Charlotte still has a 3 game lead over the next best team after the loss). Whalen was ‘zoned in with his curveball,’ and in control early against the Stone Crabs, retiring the first 10 in a row (3 SO, 7 GO) before running into some 4th inning trouble. A one-out single lined into RF broke the perfect streak to start the game, and then Whalen allowed his first walk of the night. The next batter would groundout to McNeil, but the Mets couldn’t turn two on the play, which kept the inning alive for Maxx Tissenbaum. Tissenbaum would bring home the Crabs first run with a single into RF, which made it a 4-1 game, but Yeixon Ruiz picked up an OF assist throwing out Jake Bauers at 3B. St. Lucie had jumped out to the four-run lead in the 3rd. After loading the bases with two outs, Matt Oberste would reach on an error, which brought to the plate suddenly hot Dominic Smith, who singled home two with a line drive into LF. The Crabs would use back-to-back two out doubles in the 5th two bring home two more runs, which made it a 4-3 game. However, the Mets did not waste time adding some insurance, as the first 6 reached in the bottom of the 5th for their second 4-run inning. Mike Hepple continued his great work out of the pen for 2 innings, but Kyle Regnault couldn’t strand a leadoff triple in the 9th, leading to an 8-4 final

Foster Griffin (0-0, 7.20 ERA) @ Casey Meisner (2-1, 1.78 ERA)
vs. Lexington (14-19) at 7:05 PM
Yesterday: L 5-2 (Savannah, Lexington)
Today: L 9-3, Meisner (2.31 ERA) – 4.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, BB, 4 SO, HR, 2 HBP, 95 Pitches (62 Strikes), 7 GO: 1 FO
Lineup
SS – Luis Guillorme – 1-5, R, RBI (16), SO
2B – Jean Rodriguez – 0-2, BB, SB (4), SAC, SO
LF – Stefan Sabol – 2-4, 2 2B (9), SO
1B – Jon Leroux – 0-4, 2 SO
3B – Eudor Garcia – 0-4, SO
RF – Wuilmer Becerra – 1-4, 2B (8), SO
C – Tomas Nido – 0-4, SO
DH – Vicente Lupo – 1-2, R, 2 BB, SO
CF – Patrick Biondi – 2-4, R
Bullpen:
Alberto Baldonado (L, 0-4, 2.50 ERA) – 1.1 IP, 2 H, R, BB, 2 SO, 2 GO, 2 IR – 0 S
Ricky Knapp (3.86 ERA) – 1.2 IP, 3 H, R, 2 SO, 2 GO: 1 FO
David Roseboom (1.96 ERA) – 0.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R (3 ER), 2 GO, 1 IR – 0 S
Paul Paez (0.00 ERA) – 0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 IR – 0 S

Casey Meisner had his shortest and least effective outing in the SAL, but left with Savannah tied, and the game very much within reach. Meisner started the game with 3 strikeouts in the 1st, but also allowed a two-run bomb to Ryan O’Hearn. Meisner worked around some 2nd inning trouble, but couldn’t escape a leadoff double in the 3rd. But the Sand Gnats would explode for all of their offense in the bottom of the 3rd, picking up 3 straight hits to start the inning, and salvaging two more runs after a fielding error by O’Hearn. Meisner did not work a clean inning in the game, and had to be replaced in the 5th with two on and two outs. Baldonado came in and cleaned up the mess in the 5th, but then put the Gnats behind 4-3 in the 6th. The Legends would add another run in the 8th before blowing things open with 4 in the 9th. Savannah had few chances to add to their total after the 3rd, and failed to capitalize on any of them. The offense could really use a boost, where is Dash Winningham or Michael Katz?

Minors MVP of the Day – Big night from the X-Man, Xorge Carrillo, who has had a very strong calendar year in the minors, and may have a future as a backup in the bigs.

Minors Cy of the Day – Steven Matz has dominated the PCL like few pitchers have, and has been making his starts in one of the three worst places to pitch in that offensive haven. I really don’t want to lose Matz or Thor.
