Recapish

The Columbia Fireflies stopped their losing skid Monday night behind staff co-ace Jordan Humphreys. Humphreys made it a perfect 6-0 through 6 starts, and he’s the only starter in the minors or majors who has done that in 2017.  Dash Winningham launched a three run blast to the back of the RF berm in the 1st, which provided more than enough offense for Humphreys.
Humphreys faced just one over the minimum during the first two innings, but a lot of foul balls forced him to throw 38 pitches early. He struck out Henri Lartigue in the 1st and then bookended the 2nd with strikeouts of Darick Hall and Luke Williams.

Gene Cone showed some good speed in the 1st, but he would be out by a hair. Andres Gimenez wasted little time extending his on base streak to all 8 games he’s played in, singling to get the 1st inning rally going. Luis Carpio and Michael Paez followed with walks, but Gimenez had been caught trying to steal third base a moment too soon, so Dash came up with two on and two outs. The Fireflies team provided this great highlight of the homer later in the game.

Cone picked up his hit with two outs in the 2nd, but nothing came of it for Columbia.

Lartigue led off the 4th with a double and eventually came around to score Lakewood’s only run. Humphreys nearly escaped the threat, striking out Hall for the second out of the frame, but then Brett Barbier singled on a grounder that deflected off of Milton Ramos’ glove. Humphreys ended the 4th with a strikeout of Cord Sandberg.

Desmond Lindsay ran a long way to make a nice catch to start the 6th inning, and then Humphreys struck out Lartigue and Mickey Moniak to end the frame.

Humphreys made it 10 straight with a perfect 7th inning, striking out Hall and Sandberg (again and again) to bring his total to 9 for the game.

The Fireflies added some insurance runs in the 7th inning to put this game further out of reach. Tim Tebow started the rally with a single into LF, went to 2B on an Ali Sanchez single, and then they both came home when Lakewood reliever Mauricio Llovera slipped trying to make a throw to third base.

Max Kuhns took over for Humphreys in the 8th and immediately found himself in trouble. The first two Blue Claws batters reached, and they eventually had 1st and 3rd with one out for the top of the lineup. But Kuhns buckled down, striking out Daniel Brito and Lartigue in the 8th, and then Sandberg to end the game in the 9th.

With this series wrapped up, the Columbia Fireflies have an off day Tuesday before they head on the road for 4 games over 3 days against Delmarva, and then 4 more in Lakewood. Gabriel Llanes (0-2, 3.03 ERA) is scheduled to make the start in the opener, which is set for 7:05 PM on Wednesday.
