Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s won their 6th straight game to clinch their 4-game
series with Reno Thursday night. Gabriel Ynoa was dealing for the 51s while
Travis Taijeron was playing the role of bouncer, as in he was bouncing extra
base hits all over the place en route to 4 RBI’s.
Ynoa’s
secondary stuff was looking as good as I can remember seeing it over the past
1.5 years, and he set a season high with 8 strikeouts. He only reached 8 strikeouts
once with Binghamton in 2015, and he surpassed that total once each with St.
Lucie (11 K’s) and Binghamton (9) during the 2014 season. The 11 swinging
strikes were also a season high for Ynoa, and this was only the third time in
15 starts that he reached a double digit swinging strike total.
The
51s jumped ahead big early thanks to a crooked number on the scoreboard in the
2nd and 3rd innings. Travis Taijeron and Nevin Ashley
both hit two run bombs in the 2nd inning, and then Taijeron added a
two run double in the 3rd.
Considering
how overworked his pen has been the past few days, Manager Wally Backman wanted
to get as much out of Ynoa as was possible, which is why he was left in for 110
pitches. Ynoa took his shutout into the 6th inning, but the Aces
made that disappear in short order. After Todd Glaesmann put two on the board
for Reno with a triple, Ynoa settled down to retire the final two batters of
his outing while stranding Glaesmann at 3B.
Chase
Bradford would finish off the frame for Ynoa and he kept Glaesmann stranded at
3B. Wally Backman went to Seth Lugo in the 8th, perhaps hoping to
get two out of the recently converted starter. An E6 opened the door for a big
Reno inning, and Zach Borenstein launched a three run blast off Lugo to make
this an 8-6 game.
With
Reno charging, Backman went to hard throwing lefty Josh Smoker. Smoker was
lighting up the radar gun again, and he finished the game with a strikeout of
Kyle Jensen. The K pushed the 51s tally to 12 in the game, with Jensen
responsible for 3 of those strikeouts.
I
break down the scoring and strikeout highlights below, so enjoy! This series
wraps up Friday night at 10:05 PM, with Darin Gorski scheduled to make his
return to the organization and affiliated ball.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Gavin
Cecchini led off the game with a single pulled into LF.
After
Eric Campbell hit the first pitch of the 2nd for a single, Travis
Taijeron hit the next pitch over the wall to give Las Vegas a 2-0 lead. Nevin
Ashley added his third homer of the season two batters later to make it 4-0.
Dilson
Herrera and Soup led got on base in front of Taijeron in the 3rd
inning, and the PCL doubles leader became the PCL RBI’s leader with a 2R double
into LF. Gabriel Ynoa added an RBI single thanks to some first-pitch hitting
later in the frame.
Brandon
Nimmo added a pair of hits in the game.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Gavin
Cecchini airmailed the throw to 1B on the easiest grounder hit his way all
night, but made a nice play on a hotshot earlier in the game.

After
retiring the Aces in order during the 1st inning, Ynoa walked Kyle
Jensen to start the 2nd inning. He bounced back to strikeout Mitch
Haniger for the first out of the 2nd.
With
Jensen on 3B and two outs, Ynoa struck out Todd Glaesmann swinging to end the
threat.
He
ran his streak to 5 straight retired by setting down the first two Reno batters
in the 3rd, including Edwin Escobar via the strikeout.
Ynoa
started the 4th inning with a strikeout of Jense.
Haniger
went down swinging next to make it back-to-back K’s for Ynoa.
Pinch-hitter
Sean Jamieson had a go at Ynoa in the 5th and he went down swinging.
Ynoa
finished the 6th with another strikeout of Jensen. The K also
finished a streak of 7-straight Reno batters set down by Gabe.
The
Aces finally broke through against Ynoa in the 7th. Haniger and Zach
Borenstein led off the frame with singles and Todd Glaesmann tripled them both
home. Ynoa retired the next two before being removed at 110 pitches. He
finished on a high note, striking out pinch-hitter Ed Lucas for a season high 8th
K.
Chase Bradford
Bradford
finished the 7th with a strikeout of Mike Freeman.
Seth Lugo
Lugo
started the 8th inning with a strikeout of Jack Reinhemer.
Lugo
finished the 8th inning with a strikeout of Carlos Rivero.
Josh Smoker
Smoker
has looked great this series and was given a chance in the closer’s role
Thursday night. He came through with a scoreless inning, finishing his night
with a strikeout of Kyle Jensen.
