Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies finished sweeping up the Braves in Rome Wednesday afternoon
behind a strong start from Tyler Badamo and a huge 8th inning. Kevin
Kaczmarski provided the big hit of the game, clearing the bases with an extra base
hit for the second time in the series to make it a 7-3 game.
This
game started out as another SAL pitching duel, with Columbia holding a 2-0 lead
into the 6th inning. Pat Mazeika provided a 1st inning
RBI double to give the team a 1-0 lead and they tacked on a second run on a
double play grounder in the 4th.
Meanwhile,
Badamo was making quick work of the Braves lineup. He retired them in order in
3 of the first 4 innings, although he had plenty of help from his shortstop
Milton Ramos. Ramos was kept busy all night, with 9 put outs recorded in 9
innings (!) per the gameday log.
This game took a huge turn in the
bottom of the 6th against Badamo. He had retired the first two
batters in short order, but then the next two reached on singles for bring up
Carlos Castro. Castro hit his second homer of the year, and the series, to give
Rome a temporary 3-2 lead.
Not only did Kaczmarski provide a
huge bases clearing double in the 8th, but he also provided an RBI
bunt single in the 7th and he’s looking really good at the plate right
now. The Fireflies did 2 one-swing rounds of BP before switching groups on
Monday, and Kaczmarski launched one into the Cola bullpen in right center field
on his second swing.
After the Fireflies took control of
this game with their big 8th, Manager Jose Leger switched Tyler’s
and brought in the flamethrowing Bashlor. Bashlor made quick work of the Braves
over 2 innings and issued 0 walks, which is always a plus.
I break down the scoring details
with highlights, and have included a pair of Ramos web gems and the Cola K’s
below, so enjoy! The Fireflies left for some home cooking after the game ended.
They open a series with the red-hot Hagerstown Suns Thursday night at 7:05 PM,
with Joe Shaw (3-2, 3.21 ERA) scheduled to pitch for the Fireflies.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Kevin
Kaczmarski led off the game with a walk and then came around to score on
Patrick Mazeika’s third double of the year.
Dash
Winningham led off the 4th inning with a double, went to 3B on
Milton Ramos’ first hit of the game, and then scored on a double play
groundout.
J.C.
Rodriguez started June with a big game at the plate, which included a 5th
inning hustle double - love seeing that effort J.C.!
An
E4 opened the door for the Fireflies to tie the game at 3 in the 7th.
Jeffrey Diehl had led off the inning with a walk and then scored on a bunt single
from Kacz.
The
Fireflies sent 8 batters to the plate in the 8th, when the opened up
an 8-3 lead in the game. Luis Ortega sparked the rally by reaching on an
infield hit to his counterpart at 3B. The Fireflies would eventually load the
bases for Kevin Kaczmarski in the frame, and Rome chose to bring in a fresh arm
from the pen to face the red-hot outfielder. But Kacz didn’t care who was
pitching, and he cleared the bases for the second time in the series, this time
on a triple. J.C. followed with his third hit of the game to make it an 8-3
game.
Dash
extended the 9th with a two out single, went to 2B on a wild pitch,
and then scored on Ramos’ second hit of the game.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Milton
Ramos was busy at shortstop and added another couple of plays to his 2016
highlight reel.
