Recapish
The
Binghamton Mets slide continued Thursday night as they fell to 14-games under
.500. Although they took a sweep at the hands of Altoona, the B-Mets did have
one glimmer of hope yesterday. Top Mets prospect Amed Rosario was promoted
earlier in the day, and he’d make his season debut with Binghamton in the 9th
as a pinch hitter.
Of
course, on the one night this week that the B-Mets bats start clicking, the
pitching comes up short. After Binghamton jumped ahead 1-0 in the 1st,
Altoona tied it at 1 in the 3rd and scored a run in each of the next
5 frames. The B-Mets rallied to make it a 5-4 game after 5, but the Curve kept
adding on until it was 9-4 after their final run scored in the 8th.
Binghamton starter Josh Zeid
struggled with command throughout the night, though 3 of his 4 walks didn’t
even come back to burn him. He could be interesting again out of the bullpen,
but his stuff hasn’t been holding up later in his starts.
Logan Taylor was asked to work two
innings and it was a battle for him. A two-base throwing error in the 6th
inning set up an unearned run for the Curve, and they rallied for another pair
of runs off him in the 7th.
It wasn’t until David Roseboom came
on for the 9th that the Curve’s scoring streak was snapped. The BOOM
retired all 3 Altoona batters in the 9th, but the lead was too
far-gone at that point.
However, any B-Mets fans who stuck
around until the end got treated with the highlight of the night. First, Colton
Plaia doubled and came around to score on the second out of the frame. Then
Amed Rosario was sent up to pinch-hit, which is what everyone in Binghamton has
been waiting for since opening day. Rosario did not disappoint, lining a 2-0
pitch into the LF corner for a double, and then coming around to score on
Derrik Gibson’s fourth hit of the game. He should be starting tomorrow.
With this series in the books,
Binghamton will turn their attention to the Richmond Flying Squirrels. At
27-45, Richmond is the only team with a worse record than Binghamton in the
Eastern League, and they’ve had the B-Mets number so far this season. The
B-Mets will look to Amed Rosario to be the spark they need to end two losing
streaks: expected starter Mickey Jannis’ 7-game losing streak – he’s 1-7 with a
5.53 ERA this season – and the B-Mets 6-game skid.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Derrik
Gibson led off the bottom of the 1st with a single lined into center
field and came around to score on L.J. Mazzilli’s 8th double of the
season.
The
B-Mets took advantage of a pair of walks in the 5th inning. Matt
Oberste and Derrik Gibson picked up back-to-back RBI singles in the frame, and
a third run came home on a RBI groundout. Phillip Evans added his hit in the
inning.
Jayce
Boyd started the 6th with a double but would be stranded at 3B.
Colton
Plaia got things started in the 9th with a double. He’d come around
to score on a groundout two batters later, but the B-Mets weren’t done for the
night. Amed Rosario was sent up to pinch-hit and hit a 2-0 pitch into the LF
corner for his first Double-A double of the season. Gibson’s fourth hit of the
night then brought him home to make it a 9-6 game.
