Homeruns
As
it tends to do, the Soup has been heating up in the desert out West. Eric
Campbell went deep for the Las Vegas 51s on Saturday.
After
the Fireflies tied the game up at 4 top-9, Ivan Wilson went oppo taco over a
36-foot wall to give them the 7-4 lead that they would win by on Sunday
in Asheville.
Gavin
Cecchini had another strong week at the plate – 8-24, 2B, HR, 6 RBI, 2 K: 5 BB
– and he added his fourth homerun of the year while on the road in Salt Lake on
Sunday.
Johnny
Monell has 5 doubles and 5 homeruns in June, and he’s pushing a 1.000 OPS for
the month in June. He added his ninth blast of the year on Monday
and then flexed his muscles for teammate Roger Bernadina.
Since
being cleared to play in field for the first time back on April 16, Dilson
Herrera is hitting .297/.344/.514 (.332 BABIP) with 19 2B, 2 3B, 11 HR and 17.8
K%: 6.4 BB%, which is good for a 126 wRC+. He hit his second grand slam of the
season on Wednesday.
The
Fireflies started the second half of the SAL season with a loss Thursday
night, but Joe Tuschak hit his third homer of the season during the 7th
inning.
The
hit wasn’t a homer, but the prospect who hit it sure looks like a homerun to
everyone who watches him play. He double as a pinch-hitter in his 2016 season
debut for Binghamton Thursday
and I cannot wait for daily Amed Rosario action!
Travis
Taijeron and Nevin Ashley both hit two run homers in the 2nd inning Thursday
night as the 51s jumped out to a 4-0 lead. They would go on to win 8-6 and
have a 6-game winning streak, with all 6 wins coming on the road.
Defense
Phillip
Evans wont be needed at shortstop for the B-Mets too often now that Amed
Rosario is here, but he looked like someone who could fill in at the spot once
a week – he’s better there than T.J. Rivera or Danny Muno, and was more
consistent than Gavin Cecchini has ever been. He showed range in both
directions while playing short on Saturday.
You
don’t see too many 5-3 double plays, but Matt Oberste actually started two of
them this past week while at the hot corner for the B-Mets.
From Sunday
Oberste
also started a 5-3 double play on Wednesday,
which was one of four turned by the B-Mets in support of Rainy Lara.
Milton
Ramos made another pair of web gems at short Thursday
night, although you unfortunately can’t see the entire play on the diving
stop. He’s been a regular on the GIFs of the Week, so click on any of the links
above and you’re almost guaranteed to see something cool from Milton Ramos.
Pitching
In
case you didn’t already read my initial Kingsport
and Brooklyn
roster previews, I’ll sum things up for you in one word: pitching. There won’t
be many opportunities to see these guys on MiLB.tv this season, but the SI
Yanks stream offered a few amazing looks at Harol Gonzalez on Saturday.
Gabriel
Ynoa made two starts this past week – Saturday
and Thursday
– and they were similar, but incredibly different. His previous start (on 6/13)
was a disaster at home against the Reno Aces: 5 IP, 14 H, 11 R (10 ER), 1 K: 1
BB, 2 HR, -3 gamescore. His total stats from this past week: 13.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R,
10 K: 5 BB. He threw 13 straight scoreless innings and was likely only sent out
for the 7th on Thursday night (when the 2 runs scored) because the
51s pen has been extremely overused lately.
He allowed just 4 hits in Salt Lake on Saturday, but
finished with 2 K: 3 BB:
He took a one-hitter into the 7th Thursday night,
but the first three batters of the frame strung together a pair of singles and
a triple to end the shutout. He struck out his last batter faced of the night
to finish with 8 K: 2 BB:
Paul
Sewald went through a rough patch with the 51s recently because he was leaving
stuff up too much. Things went mostly better for him this past week, as he
finished with 6 K and only 1 H allowed in 3.2 IP, but the one hit allowed was a
solo blast.
The Mets minor league pitchers always seem pumped to pitch
to Travis d’Arnaud, and Sewald finished with 3 K’s while T∂A was catching on Sunday:
A
reliever’s ERA is not always that useful a piece of info, but that should go
triple when talking about a PCL reliever’s ERA. Josh Smoker may have a 5.57 ERA
in 32.1 IP this season, but he also has 48 strikeouts, which is nearly 1/3 of
the number of batters he’s faced. He has walked about 1 in 10 batters this
season, but he’s only walked more than one batter in 1 of 33 appearances out of
the 51s pen. His heater was registering 99 MPH on the Reno board during these
appearances, but 51s announcer Russ Langer relayed from Wally Backman that the
radar gun is likely ~2-3 MPH fast.
Joe
Shaw’s fastball was getting hit around early Thursday,
but his breaking ball was just as nasty and effective as ever. That pitch has
been making SAL batters look foolish all season long, especially righties.
He finished with 7 strikeouts:
