May Stat Review: St. Lucie Mets

Luis Rojas’ club finished May with a 12-16 record

The St. Lucie Mets were within a game of .500 for the month during most of May, but then lost the last 5 games of the month, which dropped them from the top of the standings to the bottom (only 2.5 games out of 1st place). I don’t get to watch these guys on MiLB.tv (yet), but I try to tune in with the TuneIn radio app throughout the games, and announcer Adam MacDonald does a great job covering them. Below I’ve posted everyone’s May statline, with some comments added for each player.

May

MVP: Kevin Taylor posted an OPS just over .900, which was by far the best on the team.

Cy: Ricky Knapp is having his best season as a pro starting for the St. Lucie Mets this year.

Fireman: Kevin McGowan has been excellent out of the St. Lucie Mets pen, and gave them a big spot start effort during a double-header late in the month.

Offense

Kevin Taylor - 99 PA, 0.326/0.414/0.488, 13 R, 5 2B, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 11 BB, 2 HBP, 15 K, 1 GIDP, 4.4% SwStr, 10.9% Whiff/Swing, 4.1 Pitches/PA, 0.362 BABIP
Taylor played in Indy ball with fellow Mets farmhand Casey Delgado and will probably rejoin Delgado with the B-Mets soon. It will be interesting to see how that contact rate translates against more advanced pitching

Jonathan Johnson - 45 PA, 0.306/0.422/0.361, 6 R, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 8 BB, 1 SF, 6 K, 4 SB, 2 CS, 3.2% SwStr, 10.9% Whiff/Swing, 4.8 Pitches/PA, 0.355 BABIP
MacDonald recently noted that Johnson, listed at 5’9”, has such a small strike zone that pitchers have trouble throwing strikes to him. He’s tough to strikeout, he’ll take his walks or slap the ball somewhere, and he’s a solid defender at 2B. He’s also 27 and on the St. Lucie bench

Wuilmer Becerra - 100 PA, 0.319/0.333/0.383, 10 R, 6 2B, 10 RBI, 1 BB, 2 HBP, 2 SF, 1 SAC, 17 K, 1 GIDP, 4 SB, 18.3% SwStr, 28.8% Whiff/Swing, 3.6 Pitches/PA, 0.380 BABIP
Becerra’s not showing much power, but who knows what the Mets are telling him to work on, and the hits keep falling in

Tomas Nido - 74 PA, 0.250/0.297/0.382, 7 R, 6 2B, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 1 SF, 15 K, 16.9% SwStr, 30.5% Whiff/Swing, 3.4 Pitches/PA, 0.302 BABIP
Nido’s strikeouts ticked up in May, but he still posted a better rate than last year in Savannah. Baseball-reference has him at a 44% caught stealing rate (27 runners caught stealing on 61 attempts) through the first two months of the season.

Amed Rosario - 117 PA, 0.279/0.350/0.327, 11 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 13 RBI, 12 BB, 1 SF, 13 K, 5 GIDP, 5 SB, 3 CS, 10.2% SwStr, 20.9% Whiff/Swing, 3.4 Pitches/PA, 0.315 BABIP
Rosario hit a bunch of extra base hits but barely walked in April, and then did the opposite in May. Obviously he didn’t plan to hit fewer extra base hits, but he mentioned that he was working on going deeper in counts in a tweet posted at the end of April, so there’s that.

Patrick Biondi - 36 PA, 0.281/0.361/0.312, 4 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 12 K, 3 SB, 12.5% SwStr, 26.7% Whiff/Swing, 3.6 Pitches/PA, 0.450 BABIP
Adam MacDonald reported that some Mets people think he is the best defensive outfielder in the system

Champ Stuart - 111 PA, 0.222/0.306/0.343, 20 R, 5 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 11 BB, 1 HBP, 38 K, 1 GIDP, 7 SB, 15.2% SwStr, 35.6% Whiff/Swing, 4 Pitches/PA, 0.350 BABIP
Stuart’s strikeouts have returned in full force, but unlike last year, Champ is still picking up some extra base hits

John Mora - 100 PA, 0.200/0.303/0.306, 9 R, 4 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 11 BB, 2 HBP, 1 SF, 1 SAC, 18 K, 4 GIDP, 3 CS, 9.6% SwStr, 22.5% Whiff/Swing, 3.3 Pitches/PA, 0.239 BABIP
Don’t know how hard Mora is hitting the ball right now, but his slash line would’ve looked pretty nice with an average BABIP

Luis Guillorme - 108 PA, 0.230/0.327/0.264, 5 R, 3 2B, 12 RBI, 10 BB, 3 HBP, 1 SF, 7 SAC, 12 K, 2 GIDP, 1 CS, 5.9% SwStr, 13.1% Whiff/Swing, 4 Pitches/PA, 0.263 BABIP
Guillorme is on pace for more doubles than last year and is still posting his great K: BB rates, otherwise the Mora comment applies here too

Michael Katz - 100 PA, 0.185/0.240/0.261, 5 R, 4 2B, 1 HR, 11 RBI, 7 BB, 1 SF, 34 K, 8 GIDP, 2 SB, 13.2% SwStr, 32.7% Whiff/Swing, 4.2 Pitches/PA, 0.276 BABIP
Katz didn’t pick up an extra base hit until he went deep on May 7th, and then he got hot for about a week before finishing the month on a 4-44 stretch

Jhoan Urena - 89 PA, 0.169/0.225/0.217, 5 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 6 BB, 19 K, 2 GIDP, 10.4% SwStr, 22.5% Whiff/Swing, 3.7 Pitches/PA, 0.206 BABIP
Urena will be 21 all year, so he’s still ahead of the game, but you have to wonder how long the Mets let him struggle in the FSL

Lednier Ricardo - 28 PA, 0.120/0.214/0.120, 3 BB, 14 K, 21.9% SwStr, 42.6% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.273 BABIP
The Mets signed the Cuban catcher Ricardo last year and he’s done very little in his few opportunities. He posted an .878 OPS as a 24-year old in his final season playing in Cuba, but that was in 2012, and BB-Ref has nothing listed for his interim playing time.

Pitching

Starters

Casey Delgado - 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R (3 ER), 6 TB, 3 BB, 5 K (4 K/Sw), 10 GB: 4 FB: 2 LD: 3 PU, 88 Pitches (53 Strikes), 9 Swinging, 14 Called, 10.2% SwStr, 23.1% Whiff/Swing, 14.7 Pitches/IP, 27 BF
Delgado blazed through the FSL and is now working to establish himself in the B-Mets rotation

Ricky Knapp - 33.2 IP, 25 H, 10 R (7 ER), 6 2B, 1 HR, 34 TB, 7 BB, 19 K (16 K/Sw), 60 GB: 19 FB: 13 LD: 10 PU, 407 Pitches (272 Strikes), 44 Swinging, 64 Called, 10.8% SwStr, 21.2% Whiff/Swing, 12.1 Pitches/IP, 133 BF
I saw him on MiLB.tv a few times last year with Savannah and Knapp was controlling a nice curve but his fastball was topping out in the upper 80’s

Corey Oswalt - 28.2 IP, 30 H, 12 R (12 ER), 6 2B, 1 HR, 39 TB, 5 BB, 26 K (21 K/Sw), 50 GB: 13 FB: 15 LD: 5 PU, 443 Pitches (292 Strikes), 53 Swinging, 75 Called, 12% SwStr, 24.4% Whiff/Swing, 15.5 Pitches/IP, 117 BF
Just like with Savannah last year, Oswalt is allowing a high number of hits, but he’s also posting a solid K-rate with great BB and GB rates.

Chris Flexen - 28.1 IP, 25 H, 14 R (13 ER), 4 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 42 TB, 12 BB, 17 K (10 K/Sw), 43 GB: 26 FB: 17 LD: 5 PU, 465 Pitches (284 Strikes), 34 Swinging, 71 Called, 7.3% SwStr, 16% Whiff/Swing, 16.4 Pitches/IP, 121 BF
Flexen has one of the best arms among the current full season starters in the Mets system, sitting in the low-90’s with his heat and mixing in a big curve.

Scarlyn Reyes - 29 IP, 30 H, 15 R (15 ER), 3 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 43 TB, 10 BB, 11 K (10 K/Sw), 42 GB: 25 FB: 24 LD: 6 PU, 411 Pitches (251 Strikes), 29 Swinging, 59 Called, 7.1% SwStr, 15.1% Whiff/Swing, 14.2 Pitches/IP, 121 BF
Could still be interesting in the pen, but have to figure his rotation spot is in jeopardy

Josh Prevost - 33 IP, 46 H, 21 R (18 ER), 3 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 59 TB, 10 BB, 20 K (14 K/Sw), 67 GB: 21 FB: 19 LD: 8 PU, 531 Pitches (339 Strikes), 40 Swinging, 82 Called, 7.5% SwStr, 15.6% Whiff/Swing, 16.1 Pitches/IP, 148 BF
Prevost has a big sinker that has allowed him to post huge groundball rates, but he continues to allow a sky high BABIP. Scary moment for Prevost on the last game of the month: he took a line drive off his head - it hit him right above his right eyebrow - but would walk off the field on his own accord and was deemed OK by the Mets trainers before that game ended

Relievers

Tim Peterson - 8.1 IP, 5 H, 5 TB, 2 BB, 16 K (12 K/Sw), 3 GB: 5 FB: 5 LD: 1 PU, 118 Pitches (82 Strikes), 24 Swinging, 25 Called, 20.3% SwStr, 42.1% Whiff/Swing, 14.2 Pitches/IP, 32 BF
Peterson’s great start earned him a promotion to the B-Mets at the end of the month

Alberto Baldonado - 6.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 2B, 8 TB, 2 BB, 8 K (6 K/Sw), 5 GB: 6 FB: 4 LD: 3 PU, 133 Pitches (83 Strikes), 22 Swinging, 24 Called, 16.5% SwStr, 37.3% Whiff/Swing, 19.9 Pitches/IP, 29 BF
Baldonado’s great start earned him a promotion to the B-Mets at the end of the month

Mike Hepple - 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R (1 ER), 4 TB, 2 BB, 2 K (2 K/Sw), 6 GB: 3 FB: 1 LD: 1 PU, 50 Pitches (30 Strikes), 6 Swinging, 5 Called, 12% SwStr, 24% Whiff/Swing, 16.7 Pitches/IP, 15 BF
Hepple had trouble finding the zone at times with the B-Mets this year, so he’s back in St. Lucie and looking to find the form that made him a FSL All-Star in 2015.

Kelly Secrest - 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 2B, 4 TB, 2 K (2 K/Sw), 3 GB: 1 FB: 2 LD, 33 Pitches (22 Strikes), 5 Swinging, 3 Called, 15.2% SwStr, 26.3% Whiff/Swing, 16.5 Pitches/IP, 8 BF

Kevin McGowan - 14 IP, 14 H, 2 R (1 ER), 3 2B, 1 HR, 20 TB, 1 BB, 11 K (8 K/Sw), 19 GB: 12 FB: 6 LD: 4 PU, 204 Pitches (136 Strikes), 30 Swinging, 34 Called, 14.7% SwStr, 29.4% Whiff/Swing, 14.6 Pitches/IP, 53 BF
McGowan has just been attacking the zone out of the pen this year and it’s led to an elite walk rate, which is one of my favorite attributes of a reliever

Ben Griset - 8.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R (1 ER), 1 HR, 8 TB, 3 BB, 8 K (6 K/Sw), 10 GB: 9 FB: 4 LD: 2 PU, 129 Pitches (78 Strikes), 15 Swinging, 18 Called, 11.6% SwStr, 25% Whiff/Swing, 14.9 Pitches/IP, 37 BF
Didn’t get a velo reading on Griset last year, but he controlled a solid curve from the left side

Corey Taylor - 9.2 IP, 10 H, 3 R (0 ER), 10 TB, 1 BB, 2 K (2 K/Sw), 19 GB: 4 FB: 7 LD: 3 PU, 136 Pitches (88 Strikes), 11 Swinging, 18 Called, 8.1% SwStr, 15.7% Whiff/Swing, 14.1 Pitches/IP, 38 BF
Taylor sits low 90’s with his heat and is a groundball machine

Paul Paez - 7 IP, 7 H, 3 R (1 ER), 2 2B, 9 TB, 1 BB, 7 K (4 K/Sw), 7 GB: 8 FB: 4 LD, 110 Pitches (73 Strikes), 15 Swinging, 19 Called, 13.6% SwStr, 27.8% Whiff/Swing, 15.7 Pitches/IP, 28 BF
The little lefty has been effective when called upon for St. Lucie

Robert Coles - 8.1 IP, 16 H, 8 R (7 ER), 4 2B, 20 TB, 3 BB, 4 K (2 K/Sw), 18 GB: 4 FB: 12 LD: 2 PU, 161 Pitches (100 Strikes), 15 Swinging, 31 Called, 9.3% SwStr, 21.7% Whiff/Swing, 19.3 Pitches/IP, 44 BF

Jimmy Duff - 8.2 IP, 12 H, 10 R (6 ER), 3 2B, 3 HR, 24 TB, 4 BB, 7 K (5 K/Sw), 10 GB: 10 FB: 8 LD: 2 PU, 152 Pitches (102 Strikes), 14 Swinging, 29 Called, 9.2% SwStr, 19.2% Whiff/Swing, 17.5 Pitches/IP, 43 BF
Didn’t see this coming, especially since Duff was extremely effective in his 12-game stint with St. Lucie to finish 2015
