Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s made a loud statement upon arriving in Albuquerque Thursday
night, trouncing the Isotopes 17-7 in the opener of their weekend series. Hits
were bountiful on both sides, but the 51s outslugged the Isotopes with 5
homeruns on the night.
51s
starter Sean Gilmartin didn’t have his best night on the mound, but he kind of
made up for it with a huge night at the plate. He was having an OK start until
everything fell apart in the 6th inning.
The
51s pen has been struggling lately, but they finished Thursday night with 3
scoreless innings in a tough pitching environment. Josh Edgin made his first
appearance since 5/29 and picked up a strikeout with his slider. He had wanted
to get his arm checked out as a precaution, and everything came back fine.
I
break down the scoring details with highlights below, so enjoy! This series
continues Friday night at 9:05 PM, with Rafael Montero (2-2, 4.61 ERA)
scheduled to start for the 51s.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Dilson
launched the first pitch of the game over the wall in LF. Brandon Nimmo
followed with a 400+ foot double to CF to get his big night started.
Travis
Taijeron doubled leading off the 2nd inning and then came around to
score on Sean Gilmartin’s first RBI hit of the night. Dilson nearly went deep
for the 2nd time in 2 innings, but Brandon Barnes went over the wall
to rob him of a homer.
T.J.
Rivera took a walk leading off the 3rd inning, which sparked the
biggest rally of the night for Las Vegas. T.J. went to 3B on Johnny Monell’s
first hit of the night and then scored on a sac fly from Eric Campbell. The 51s
loaded the bases for Gavin Cecchini and he capitalized with an RBI single to
LF. Gilmartin then came through with the biggest hit of the inning, clearing
the bases on a double to right center field. Dilson followed with an RBI double
of his own and the 51s held an 8-1 lead.
Travis
Taijeron hit a ‘tremendous’ two run blast in the 4th inning – that’s
how the Isotopes announcer described it, it’s just too bad the cameras didn’t
track it better.
With
Travis Taijeron on 2B after his 4th hit of the night in the 6th
inning, Dilson Herrera singled him in. Nimmo and Rivera then went back-to-back
on consecutive pitches to make this a 14-3 game.
Dilson
singled home Marc Krauss ahead of Nimmo’s second blast of the night in the 8th
inning.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Check
this one out: former Mets shortstop Jose Reyes grounds out to current Mets
shortstop-in-waiting Gavin Cecchini. Cheech also started a double play in this game and made 3 errors. All were plays he should've and could've made: two on grounders that he just didn't field and the middle one was on a missed catch error after Dilson made a great stop and glove-flipped him the ball. Sean Gilmartin showed off his quick reactions on a liner that caught him as much as he caught it.
