Recapish

After being signed out of Indy ball earlier this week, Darin Gorski made his return to the organization starting for the Las Vegas 51s Friday night. Gorski was hit around early and the 51s weren’t able to comeback in his season debut, but most of the Las Vegas pen did get to rest, which was a minor victory for Manager Wally Backman.
Gorski found himself trailing 3-0 with just one out recorded in the 1st after Kyle Jensen went deep for the 13th time this season. He didn’t have good command early, but he got sharper later in the start. The Aces managed just a pair of singles against him after the 1st inning, and he left in a 4-3 game.
Unfortunately for the 51s, Reno went to work on Gorski’s replacements Zack Thornton and Chase Huchingson. The 51s radio feed wasn’t working, so I didn’t hear a Langer report on who was available out of the pen, but I think the pen was still trying to recover from their combined effort during Wednesday’s win. That’s likely why Wally didn’t do his normal micromanaging and Chase Huchingson was left in for 44 pitches.
The 51s had a chance to tie this game in the 8th, but only scored one on a hit that nearly left the park for a grand slam. I break down that play and the other 51s scoring highlights below, so enjoy! With this series wrapped up, the 51s head home to host the Sacramento River Cats. Game one is Saturday night at 10:05 PM, and Rafael Montero (3-4, 5.78 ERA) is scheduled to make the start.

MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights

Brandon Nimmo singled in the 1st to extend his hitting streak to 6 games, but that also marked 20 of 21 games with a hit for the soon-to-be-Mets outfielder.

After falling behind 4-0 in the 1st, Las Vegas had a chance to really break into that lead in the 2nd. Johnny Monell, Travis Taijeron, and Kevin Plawecki led off the frame with singles to load the bases, but Vegas managed just one run on a double play grounder in the frame.

Plawecki and Gavin Cecchini started the 4th inning with singles and then Ty Kelly double Plaw home before an out was recorded. Cecchini was come home on a groundout to make it a 4-3 game.

Eric Campbell picked up his hit leading off the 8th inning and eventually came around to score. The 51s loaded the bases in the frame for Gavin Cecchini, and he hit a 3-2 pitch that was destined for the bullpen in RF. Unfortunately for Las Vegas, Mitch Haniger timed his jump perfect and was able to block it from going out, although he couldn’t hold on for the ridiculous catch. Had there been two outs, Cecchini would’ve at least ended up on 2B or 3B in a 7-6 game, but everyone had to hold up with only one out, so his hit only brought home one run.
