2016 Monday Morning Mets Minors Players of the Week

The 22-year old catcher has really emerged as an interesting prospect with the St. Lucie Mets this season

June 20-26, 2016

Keeping track of the hottest minor leaguers in the Mets farm system.

Hitter of the Week: Tomas Nido finished with a pair of homers last week and took a 4-pitch walk to give the St. Lucie Mets a walkoff win in the 14th inning on Friday. He crushes lefties (.967 OPS) and he’s thrown out 42% of 78 would-be base stealers, so there is some major league upside here. Of the 38 prospects I posted Split/GIF reviews for during Spring Training, Tomas Nido was the position player I identified as a potential breakout prospect after watching him online with Savannah last year.
Starting Pitcher of the Week: Gabriel Ynoa’s secondary stuff was looking great Thursday night in Reno, and he shut down an Aces lineup that had tagged him for 16 R over 11 IP over his previous two starts against Reno.

Relief Pitcher of the Week: Not your typical reliever, but Raul Jacobson put up some big numbers as the long-man behind Erik Manoah last week.
Team of the Week: The 51s had a 6-game winning streak snapped Saturday in their finale with Reno.

Bold Astro Prediction(s): My first prediction about L.J. Mazzilli’s hitting Double-A homer #1 was correct, but then I was off by a week about Dominic Smith hitting multiple homers, so I’m 1-2 with like a 400’ fly out. No rules for these predictions, and no limits on the number I’ll give in a post.
#1: B-Mets are going to finish multiple games above .500 for the week.
#2: Milton Ramos (.540 OPS in June) is going to make the cut next week (min. .800 OPS to make the cut).
#3: There will be more minor league promotions.

5-2 week

Pitchers

Gabriel Ynoa - 6.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 3B, 6 TB, 2 BB, 8 K (8 K/Sw), 8 GB: 4 FB: 3 LD: 1 PU, 110 Pitches (73 Strikes), 11 Swinging, 20 Called, 10% SwStr, 20.8% Whiff/Swing, 16.5 Pitches/IP, 27 BF
Season high in strikeouts for Ynoa and just the fourth time he’s finished with more than 6 K’s since joining the B-Mets about two years ago. Previously known as a control specialist, Ynoa has posted only one start with 0 walks this year, and 10 of 15 starts with multiple walks issued - not terrible numbers, but merely average

Paul Sewald - 4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 HR, 5 TB, 3 BB, 5 K (4 K/Sw), 3 GB: 5 FB: 3 LD, 80 Pitches (48 Strikes), 6 Swinging, 14 Called, 7.5% SwStr, 17.6% Whiff/Swing, 17.1 Pitches/IP, 20 BF
A PCL reliever giving up runs isn’t too concerning, but Sewald was hardly striking anyone out over the first half of June, so hopefully this is a sign that he’s turned things around
Josh Smoker - 3.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R (1 ER), 4 TB, 6 K (4 K/Sw), 5 GB: 2 FB: 3 LD, 71 Pitches (51 Strikes), 10 Swinging, 13 Called, 14.1% SwStr, 26.3% Whiff/Swing, 19.3 Pitches/IP, 16 BF
Smoker has been all fastball/splitter recently and it’s worked nicely. His 10% walk rate for the season is a little high, but he’s only reached two walks in 1 of his 33 outings

Batters

Nevin Ashley - 14 PA, 0.417/0.429/0.750, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SF, 3 K, 8.3% SwStr, 17.9% Whiff/Swing, 4.3 Pitches/PA, 0.444 BABIP
Showed off a nice arm this past week too, even ending a game on the classic strike-em-out-pick-em-off-at-1B.
Roger Bernadina - 23 PA, 0.381/0.435/0.667, 5 R, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 2 BB, 4 K, 2 GIDP, 1 SB, 13.6% SwStr, 29.3% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.400 BABIP
Bernadina has an opt out in his contract and he’s been playing well enough that some team may want his services in the majors before the year is out
Johnny Monell - 27 PA, 0.320/0.370/0.720, 7 R, 1 2B, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 2 BB, 6 K, 10.7% SwStr, 22.9% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.312 BABIP
I wonder if Monell would’ve been given another look had Travis d’Arnaud suffered a setback during his rehab, because Monell has been tearing the cover off the ball over the past month, with 17 XBH (including 9 homers) since May 26th
Marc Krauss - 11 PA, 0.444/0.545/0.444, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 3 K, 12% SwStr, 27.3% Whiff/Swing, 4.5 Pitches/PA, 0.667 BABIP
With Plawecki joining the catcher’s rotation, Krauss may see time in LF when the 51s play NL teams because Wally likes his bat in the lineup
Brandon Nimmo - 26 PA, 0.364/0.462/0.455, 5 R, 1 3B, 4 RBI, 4 BB, 2 K, 2 GIDP, 1 SB, 1 CS, 7.4% SwStr, 15.6% Whiff/Swing, 3.6 Pitches/PA, 0.400 BABIP
The real test for Nimmo will be if he can handle inside stuff against major league quality pitching. The PCL environment is often cited as an excuse for why some Mets minor leaguers post huge numbers that never translate to the majors, but I feel like that overlooks the fact the PCL pitchers just aren’t as good as major league pitchers.
Niuman Romero - 20 PA, 0.250/0.474/0.417, 4 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 6 BB, 1 SF, 1 SAC, 1 K, 1 CS, 2.5% SwStr, 8% Whiff/Swing, 4 Pitches/PA, 0.250 BABIP
Have to applaud Romero’s willingness to keep going as a 31-year old part-time player in the minors
Eric Campbell - 29 PA, 0.333/0.517/0.333, 8 R, 3 RBI, 6 BB, 2 HBP, 9 K, 11.3% SwStr, 34.1% Whiff/Swing, 4.6 Pitches/PA, 0.583 BABIP
The Soup is in the microwave, waiting patiently to be re-heated
Travis Taijeron - 30 PA, 0.269/0.367/0.462, 6 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 9 K, 13.5% SwStr, 36% Whiff/Swing, 4.4 Pitches/PA, 0.375 BABIP
The question isn’t whether Taijeron would strikeout a lot in the majors, the question is whether he’d keep making loud contact all the time. He finished with 50 XBH last year but is already up to 44 this year in about 160 fewer plate appearances

3-3 week

Pitchers

Casey Delgado - 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 2B, 2 HR, 13 TB, 1 BB, 6 K (3 K/Sw), 2 GB: 7 FB: 6 LD: 3 PU, 104 Pitches (62 Strikes), 7 Swinging, 14 Called, 6.7% SwStr, 14.6% Whiff/Swing, 17.3 Pitches/IP, 25 BF
I missed why Delgado was out for two weeks, but he didn’t miss a beat when he returned. He was shaky in two of his first three starts for the B-Mets this year, but he’s been reliable since

Kevin McGowan - 3 IP, 1 H, 1 TB, 1 K (1 K/Sw), 3 GB: 2 FB: 2 LD, 28 Pitches (18 Strikes), 3 Swinging, 5 Called, 10.7% SwStr, 23.1% Whiff/Swing, 9.3 Pitches/IP, 8 BF
From spot starts to closing, Kevin McGowan has done a little of everything during his time with St. Lucie and Binghamton this year, and he’s done so with a lot of success. Fastball has been called at 93-94 MPH, and he’s been attacking the bottom of the zone with a nice mix of sliders and changeups
Tim Peterson - 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R (0 ER), 2 2B, 5 TB, 5 K (2 K/Sw), 3 GB: 1 LD, 36 Pitches (26 Strikes), 5 Swinging, 10 Called, 13.9% SwStr, 31.2% Whiff/Swing, 18 Pitches/IP, 9 BF
Peterson has really turned it on after that rough first appearance, with just 1 R allowed in 10 appearances since, and 7 K over his last 3 appearances (15 batters faced)

Batters

Colton Plaia - 13 PA, 0.364/0.462/0.636, 3 R, 3 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K, 12.5% SwStr, 28.6% Whiff/Swing, 3.7 Pitches/PA, 0.444 BABIP
Nearly doubled his XBH total for the season last week
Dominic Smith - 25 PA, 0.300/0.440/0.650, 5 R, 1 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 3 K, 10.6% SwStr, 25% Whiff/Swing, 3.4 Pitches/PA, 0.267 BABIP
Both homers were towering shots that just cleared the wall in LF and he was just edged for Hitter of the Week

Amed Rosario - 13 PA, 0.462/0.462/0.615, 2 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 3 K, 1 SB, 10.4% SwStr, 20% Whiff/Swing, 3.7 Pitches/PA, 0.600 BABIP
Rosario’s arrival has coincided with a few bats waking up, so hopefully the 2016 B-Mets can finally take off. Trades will be a common topic of conversation over the next few weeks, so let me go ahead and say that I would make Amed Rosario basically untouchable

L.J. Mazzilli - 20 PA, 0.389/0.421/0.556, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SAC, 2 K, 1 GIDP, 1 SB, 4.3% SwStr, 8.8% Whiff/Swing, 3.5 Pitches/PA, 0.438 BABIP
Mazzilli’s .725 OPS for the month of June represents a Double-A best, and he looks ready for a big second half
Xorge Carrillo - 12 PA, 0.375/0.583/0.375, 2 R, 1 RBI, 4 BB, 2 K, 1 GIDP, 1 CS, 5.7% SwStr, 18.8% Whiff/Swing, 4.4 Pitches/PA, 0.500 BABIP
B-Mets got good production from both of their hitters this past week
Derrik Gibson - 20 PA, 0.412/0.474/0.412, 5 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SAC, 3 K, 1 SB, 5.4% SwStr, 13.5% Whiff/Swing, 4.6 Pitches/PA, 0.500 BABIP
Gibson should see less playing time now that Rosario has arrived, but Pedro Lopez seems to like his bat at the top of the lineup

3-4 week

Pitchers

P.J. Conlon - 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 HR, 10 TB, 2 BB, 3 K (2 K/Sw), 11 GB: 6 FB: 3 LD: 5 PU, 99 Pitches (62 Strikes), 4 Swinging, 22 Called, 4% SwStr, 10% Whiff/Swing, 14.1 Pitches/IP, 30 BF
This was a strong FSL debut for the lefty with a devastating changeup. He also pitched an inning during the SAL All-Star game, finishing his frame with a strikeout of Jose Pujols
Chris Flexen - 12 IP, 12 H, 3 R (3 ER), 3 2B, 15 TB, 4 BB, 7 K (4 K/Sw), 23 GB: 9 FB: 7 LD, 179 Pitches (115 Strikes), 15 Swinging, 37 Called, 8.4% SwStr, 19.2% Whiff/Swing, 14.9 Pitches/IP, 51 BF
Flexen has had some great starts recently, but his strikeout totals have been light all season
Andrew Church - 9 IP, 8 H, 3 R (3 ER), 1 2B, 9 TB, 1 BB, 4 K (1 K/Sw), 10 GB: 10 FB: 7 LD: 2 PU, 91 Pitches (63 Strikes), 5 Swinging, 21 Called, 5.5% SwStr, 11.9% Whiff/Swing, 10.1 Pitches/IP, 35 BF
Church emerging is pretty big for the Mets system. I wish I had seen more of him, but hopefully we’ll get some in-depth reports on him from the FSL soon. Check out video of Church warming up and more from his May 30th start at my YouTube channel

Ben Griset - 4 IP, 1 BB, 3 K (0 K/Sw), 6 GB: 1 FB: 1 PU, 48 Pitches (29 Strikes), 3 Swinging, 9 Called, 6.2% SwStr, 15% Whiff/Swing, 12 Pitches/IP, 12 BF
The lefty has quietly been dominant out of the St. Lucie pen this year, holding FSL batters to a .154 batting average
Domingo Tapia - 3 IP, 1 H, 1 2B, 2 TB, 1 BB, 3 K (3 K/Sw), 1 GB: 4 FB: 1 LD: 1 PU, 41 Pitches (27 Strikes), 5 Swinging, 6 Called, 12.2% SwStr, 23.8% Whiff/Swing, 13.7 Pitches/IP, 11 BF
Good to see Tapia is back from Tommy John Surgery and actually throwing strikes

Batters

Tomas Nido - 24 PA, 0.333/0.417/0.619, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 3 K, 1 GIDP, 15.6% SwStr, 27.3% Whiff/Swing, 3.2 Pitches/PA, 0.312 BABIP
Nido cut his strikeout rate in half this year, which is a big reason why he’s 4th in the FSL with a .301 batting average. He’s also improved his walk rate with each passing month, and has drawn 4 walks over his past 7 games.
Kevin Taylor - 16 PA, 0.400/0.438/0.533, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 GIDP, 9.5% SwStr, 18.2% Whiff/Swing, 3.9 Pitches/PA, 0.462 BABIP
Taylor hasn’t really slowed down this year and his .815 OPS is tops on the team
Champ Stuart - 23 PA, 0.381/0.435/0.524, 3 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 5 K, 2 SB, 1 CS, 8.6% SwStr, 17.8% Whiff/Swing, 4 Pitches/PA, 0.467 BABIP
He’s still striking out 30% of the time, but he’s managed a 113 wRC+ this year and is on pace to match his career homer total of 8 entering the season
Luis Guillorme - 26 PA, 0.333/0.385/0.375, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 GIDP, 8.2% SwStr, 15.2% Whiff/Swing, 3.3 Pitches/PA, 0.364 BABIP
Guillorme has a hit in 13 of his last 14 games, with 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR and 4 K: 3 BB during that span

0-4 week

Pitchers

Tyler Bashlor - 3 IP, 1 H, 1 TB, 2 BB, 5 K (4 K/Sw), 3 GB: 1 FB: 1 LD, 37 Pitches (28 Strikes), 8 Swinging, 7 Called, 21.6% SwStr, 38.1% Whiff/Swing, 12.3 Pitches/IP, 11 BF
Bashlor was all about the heat early but his slider has become more effective throughout the season and was a serious weapon during his last outing

Johnny Magliozzi - 2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 TB, 3 K (2 K/Sw), 1 GB: 2 FB: 3 LD, 40 Pitches (26 Strikes), 7 Swinging, 4 Called, 17.5% SwStr, 31.8% Whiff/Swing, 17.2 Pitches/IP, 9 BF
His breaking ball was looking good in this outing and he was the only Cola pitcher of the game to hold Augusta scoreless
Alex Palsha - 2 IP, 1 H, 1 TB, 4 K (2 K/Sw), 1 GB: 2 LD, 28 Pitches (19 Strikes), 3 Swinging, 13 Called, 10.7% SwStr, 50% Whiff/Swing, 14 Pitches/IP, 7 BF
It’s fun watching Palsha dominating the SAL at the end of Fireflies games, but he should really be facing more advanced competition at this point

Batters

Vicente Lupo - 10 PA, 0.714/0.800/1.286, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 SB, 12.5% SwStr, 26.1% Whiff/Swing, 4.8 Pitches/PA, 0.833 BABIP
Lupo returned from his time on the Cyclones roster and went nuts against Augusta over the weekend. Unfortunately he had little help, and the Fireflies were swept in 4-games

3-4 week

Pitchers

Harol Gonzalez - 6.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 TB, 3 BB, 5 K (2 K/Sw), 7 GB: 4 FB: 2 LD: 3 PU, 86 Pitches (55 Strikes), 10 Swinging, 19 Called, 11.6% SwStr, 27.8% Whiff/Swing, 12.9 Pitches/IP, 26 BF
Took a no-hitter into the 7th but was trailing 1-0 entering the frame
Erik Manoah - 11 IP, 5 H, 3 R (3 ER), 1 3B, 2 HR, 13 TB, 2 BB, 9 K (8 K/Sw), 15 GB: 3 FB: 5 LD: 5 PU, 160 Pitches (102 Strikes), 22 Swinging, 26 Called, 13.8% SwStr, 28.9% Whiff/Swing, 14.5 Pitches/IP, 40 BF
Stepped up to pitch his best start as a pro in front of the big crowd at MCU Park for Jose Reyes’ return to the Cyclones
Merandy Gonzalez - 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 2B, 5 TB, 2 BB, 8 K (5 K/Sw), 7 GB: 3 FB: 2 LD: 1 PU, 84 Pitches (59 Strikes), 10 Swinging, 15 Called, 11.9% SwStr, 22.7% Whiff/Swing, 14 Pitches/IP, 23 BF
The 20-year old can hit mid-90’s with a nice curve and is off to a great start with Brooklyn

Raul Jacobson - 7 IP, 5 H, 1 2B, 6 TB, 1 BB, 7 K (7 K/Sw), 9 GB: 4 FB: 5 LD: 1 PU, 103 Pitches (71 Strikes), 12 Swinging, 12 Called, 11.7% SwStr, 20.3% Whiff/Swing, 14.7 Pitches/IP, 29 BF
He’s piggybacked with Manoah twice
Bryce Beeler - 3 IP, 4 K (3 K/Sw), 4 GB: 1 FB, 35 Pitches (23 Strikes), 9 Swinging, 7 Called, 25.7% SwStr, 56.2% Whiff/Swing, 11.7 Pitches/IP, 9 BF
7-hitless innings with just 1 walk allowed to begin the season
Joseph Zanghi - 2 IP, 1 H, 1 TB, 1 BB, 3 K (2 K/Sw), 1 GB: 2 FB, 31 Pitches (22 Strikes), 4 Swinging, 5 Called, 12.9% SwStr, 23.5% Whiff/Swing, 15.5 Pitches/IP, 7 BF
Nabil Crismatt - 4.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 2B, 3 TB, 2 BB, 7 K (5 K/Sw), 3 GB: 3 FB: 2 LD, 59 Pitches (41 Strikes), 14 Swinging, 15 Called, 23.7% SwStr, 53.8% Whiff/Swing, 13.6 Pitches/IP, 17 BF
It looks like Crismatt will be in a piggyback starter’s role to begin the season

Batters

Colby Woodmansee - 25 PA, 0.478/0.520/0.522, 5 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 GIDP, 1 CS, 7.1% SwStr, 19.4% Whiff/Swing, 3.9 Pitches/PA, 0.611 BABIP
Tom Gamboa has been talking the Mets 5th round pick up as a good hitter and he got to play SS next to Jose Reyes Sunday
Nick Sergakis - 32 PA, 0.321/0.406/0.429, 3 R, 3 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 3 K, 3 SB, 5.3% SwStr, 11.6% Whiff/Swing, 3 Pitches/PA, 0.360 BABIP
He had a 5-hit, 3-double performance during the Cyclones 17-inning game last Monday
Ali Sanchez - 13 PA, 0.333/0.385/0.417, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 3 K, 2.3% SwStr, 7.7% Whiff/Swing, 3.4 Pitches/PA, 0.444 BABIP
Castillo is dealing with a bruise on his right hand but the Cyclones hope he’ll be ready for Tuesday’s game in State College, which should be available on MiLB.tv

Kingsport and GCL Mets will be in this space next week!
