Recapish

The Binghamton Mets got some Major League help to finish off a series win in Altoona before heading home Wednesday night. Rehabbing Mets outfielder Juan Lagares was in CF for a second straight game, playing all 9 innings for the first time, and the recently resigned Jose Reyes was at 3B and stayed in for 8 innings. Everyone in the lineup participated in the hit party during the blowout, but those major leaguer’s were arguably helped most by the Mets top prospects with Binghamton: Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith.
B-Mets starter Mickey Jannis somehow came out of this with a quality start, which has to be uncommon for a pitcher who finishes with 1 K: 5 BB. That’s a testament to how hard the knuckler is to square up when Jannis is hitting the zone. Binghamton put together a two-out rally in the 1st to give Jannis a 2-0 lead before he even came to the mound, but back-to-back leadoff walks in the 2nd came around to tie the game for Altoona. He was more in control over his final four frames, which allowed his teammates to open up a big lead.
One of the games biggest contributors was Jayce Boyd, who finished with a 4-hit game. Boyd singled home Smith in the 1st, singled to spark the 4th inning rally, and then singled home Rosario in the 7th (he also tripled, but that led to nothing). The big effort raised his average 30 points, and he looks poised for a hot-streak.
That 4th inning rally was driven by RBI hits from Stefan Sabol and Jose Reyes. It was the first hit for Reyes since he rejoined the Mets organization, and he had that classic big Jose Reyes smile on his face when he was standing on 1B.
The B-Mets got L.J. Mazzilli home for another run after he crushed a double in the 6th, but this game really broke open when Binghamton batted around in the 7th. Rosario started the frame with his second walk of the game, and the B-Mets finished with 6 runs on 6 hits in the frame. Stefan Sabol’s ninth double of the season was among the RBI hits, but Juan Lagares’ two run triple a few batters later was the biggest hit of the inning.
Having been handed a massive lead, David Roseboom and Kevin McGowan combined to finish the final 3 innings in relatively quick fashion. Roseboom was given the chance to pinch-hit in the 9th and he came through with a double for his first ever hit as a pro. ‘Unfortunately’ for Lagares, Roseboom neither tagged up on the deep fly out to CF by Oberste (the outfielder even stumbled out there), nor tried to score on Lagares second hit of the game.
I break down the scoring details with highlights, and have included strikeout and defensive highlights below, so enjoy! After taking two of three in Altoona during a short road trip, the B-Mets come home to start a crazy series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The series opener is scheduled to start Thursday night at 6:35 PM, with Casey Delgado (4-3, 4.14 ERA) expected to make the start.

MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights

Although the first two batters of the game were retired, the B-Mets finished the 1st up 2-0. Amed Rosario worked a 5-pitch walk and then came around on Dominic Smith’s first double of the game. Jayce Boyd followed with a single through the right side that earned him an RBI, though (as you can see) Smith should’ve been out to end the inning. The catcher made the mistake of assuming Smith was out of the base paths and not tagging.

Stefan Sabol picked up his first hit of the game in the 2nd.

Boyd, Colton Plaia, and Sabol (RBI hit) connected for consecutive singles to start the 4th inning. L.J. Mazzilli then walked to load the bases with nobody out in the frame, but Mickey Jannis was up next, and he barely beat out a double play grounder. Fortunately for Binghamton, Jose Reyes was up next and he was able to come through with his first hit since re-joining the organization this past weekend. The Reyes hit knocked in another run, which made it a 5-2 game.

Jayce Boyd hit his first triple of the season in the 5th inning.

L.J. Mazzilli smoked his ninth double of the season over the left fielder’s head in the 6th.

Rosario’s second walk of the game sparked the B-Mets biggest rally. Smith and Boyd followed with singles to bring Rosario home, but the fun was just getting started. Sabol bloop doubled home a run, Mazzilli singled home two, Phillip Evans came through with a pinch-hit single, and, to cap it all off, Juan Lagares hit a two run triple.

Smith’s hit his 15th double of the year leading off the 8th, but would advance no further than 2B in the frame.

David Roseboom opened up one last rally with a double off an outfielder in the 9th. Roseboom wasn’t trying to push it on the base paths, but the B-Mets got him him with a Lagares single and Rosario RBI double.

            The Amed Rosario highlights.

Not defense, but a highlight of his speed

Jose Reyes was only tested at 3B once.

For some reason, Stetson Allie and/or his coach thought it would be a good idea to test Juan Lagares’ arm in the 2nd – we thank you for the fun highlight Mr. Allie.

Jannis set down Chris Diaz looking to start the 3rd inning for his only strikeout of the night.

David Roseboom

The BOOM struck out Anderson Feliz for the second out of the 7th inning.

He then started the 8th with a strikeout of Barrett Barnes.

Kevin McGowan

McGowan would strikeout the first and final batter of the 9th, and it was the same pair of batters that Roseboom set down on strikes.
