Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies fell behind big early Thursday night in their opener with
Hagerstown, and the Suns pitching staff was able to hold onto that lead until
they won. David Thompson and Ivan Wilson each had a pair of hits and combined
for 3 doubles, but the Fireflies offense didn’t have enough comeback magic in
them this time.
The
Suns were hitting Joe Shaw hard early, picking up two doubles while jumping out
to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning. Shaw would limit the damage in the
1st but a bout of wildness opened the door for a big Hagerstown 2nd
inning. Shaw walked a pair in the inning, and in two of the worst situations
for a pitcher to walk a batter: he walked Matthew Page to start the frame, and
he walked Ian Sagdal with the bases loaded. But it was a wild pitch that really
hurt the situation, as it put an extra runner on and extended the inning. You
can’t be sure how the inning would’ve turned out, but at least extra two runs
came home because they didn’t complete the strikeout of Cody Dent.
After
that long inning, Shaw hit the first batter of the 3rd and then
retired 8 of the final 9 batters to face him, erasing the one baserunner with a
pickoff along the way. Witt Haggard and Johnny Magliozzi would limit the damage
to just an unearned run over the final 4 innings, but Columbia’s comeback
efforts came up short. It was the first appearance for Haggard since 4/10, and
his first scoreless appearance in 3 outings this year.
I
break down the scoring, defense, and pitching highlights below, so enjoy! This
series continues in Columbia Friday night at 7:05 PM, with Chase Ingram (3-4,
4.40 ERA) scheduled to start for the Fireflies.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Dash
Winningham doubled for the 14th time with one out in the 2nd
inning.
Not
wanting to be caught, David Thompson doubled for the 15th time with
one out in the 4th inning - it went to LF but the cameras didn't track it well.
Jeff
Diehl sparked the 5th inning rally with a leadoff triple. Ivan
Wilson doubled him home two batters later to get Cola on the board - talk about a gift double! Thompson
added an RBI single with the bases loaded later in the frame.
Milton
Ramos led off the 6th inning with a single through the left side and
then came home on Wilson’s second RBI double of the night.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Milton
Ramos made another fine play in the 9th inning, this time to start
an inning ending double play.
