Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s blew multiple three run leads in Reno Wednesday night, taking the
L when Peter O’Brien came through with a walkoff grand slam for the Aces in the
9th inning. The 51s pen has been overworked lately, and even the
normally reliable Paul Sewald didn’t have enough in the tank to finish this one
off for Las Vegas.
Las
Vegas jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first two innings on the back of three
extra base hits: Johnny Monell doubled home Brandon Nimmo and Travis Taijeron
doubled off the base of the CF wall to bring home Monell in the 1st,
and then Marc Krauss launched one into the woods beyond RF in the 2nd
inning.
Duane
Below faced the minimum over the first 3 innings, and had little trouble after
the 4th inning, but gave up some loud contact and the lead in the 4th.
Mike Freeman and O’Brien singled ahead of Kyle Jensen, who then launched his 6th
bomb of the year to tie the game. Socrates Brito added a triple in the frame,
but he would be gunned out at home for the second out of the inning.
Las
Vegas was quick to get those runs back in the 5th and then added on
with one more in the 8th, but no lead has been safe for the 51s pen
lately. Erik Goeddel and Josh Smoker combined to strikeout 3 in the 8th,
but the 9th did not go as well.
Perhaps the Aces were pumped up
after Phil Nevin had been thrown out in the 8th, because they were a
different team in the 9th. Nevin took exception to the way home
plate ump Brett Terry ruled Peter O’Brien out on a swinging strike 3 without
looking to the first base ump for help on whether it was a full swing. The Aces
booth showed a perfectly angled replay and it looked pretty clear that he was
able to check his swing, so Nevin and O’Brien had a legit case, but that
doesn’t guarantee the other ump would’ve even seen it that way.
After all that hoopla in the 8th,
of course this game would come down to O’Brien in the 9th, and the
baseball gods couldn’t have set a better stage for him: bottom of the 9th,
two outs, bases loaded, facing the other teams closer, grand slam wins it… and
he hit the grand slam out to right field. A fitting end for a PCL battle, even
if it wasn’t the one Las Vegas wanted to see.
I break down the scoring details
with highlights below, so enjoy! These two wrap up this series Thursday night
at 10:05 PM, with Gabriel Ynoa (6-1, 2.40 ERA) scheduled to pitch for Las
Vegas.
