Recapish
The
Fireflies started their second half on the wrong foot Thursday night in
Columbia, taking a 6-3 loss to Augusta in a game they trailed from the start.
Cola
starter Joe Shaw found himself behind 3-0 before an out was recorded in the
game. Shaw was getting ahead in the count early, and induced plenty of swinging
strikes with his breaking ball, but he had trouble putting hitters away early.
He walked the leadoff batter after getting ahead 0-2, allowed a 3R homer in the
1st inning after getting ahead 0-1, and the next batter singled off
him after Shaw got ahead 0-2 in the AB. He was more effective after the 1st,
but he still allowed a second blast to Matt Winn leading off the 3rd
inning.
The
Fireflies didn’t wait long to start chipping away at the lead, as leadoff man
J.C. Rodriguez tripled and scored in the 1st inning. Unfortunately
they had few scoring opportunities after that. They managed to get Dash
Winningham home after he doubled in the 4th inning, but then they
had 0 runners on base in the 5th, 6th, and 7th
innings. Tuschak did go deep in the 7th, which kept things
interesting, but it was too little too late.
After
failing to clinch a playoff spot in the 1st half, the pressure will
be on the Fireflies to do well down the stretch. They will be looking to get
back to 1-1 and start a winning streak behind Chase Ingram (4-5, 4.21 ERA)
Friday night, with game time set for 7:05 PM.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
J.C.
Rodriguez was quick to get the Fireflies a run back in the 1st,
tripling and then coming home on Luis Ortega’s RBI single.
Dash
Winningham led off the 4th inning with his 21st double of
the season. Dash went to 3B on a groundout and scored on Milton Ramos’ RBI
single into RF.
Joe
Tuschak hit a solo blast in the 7th to make it a 6-3 game.
Kevin
Kaczmarski led off the 8th with his 14th double of the
season, but the Fireflies couldn’t advance him beyond 2B. Patrick Mazeika added
his hit leading off the 9th and would be stranded at 1B.

After
the first 4 reached against Shaw, he was able to strikeout Matt Winn for the
first out of the game.
He then finished the frame with a
strikeout of Johneshwy Fargas.
After allowing a two out RBI single
to Miguel Gomez in the 2nd, Shaw bounced back to strikeout Dylan
Davis for the final out of the frame.
The Green Jackets scored their
final run against Shaw in the 3rd, but he finished the frame with a
strikeout of Seth Harrison.
Things went better for Shaw in the
4th, as he limited Augusta to just one single, which came off the
bat of Gomez. He sandwiched the single with a pair of strikeouts:
Jalen Miller for the second out of the inning.
Dylan Davis for the final out of the inning.
Shaw’s
final strikeout of the game came against Skyler Ewing for the second out of the
5th.
Witt Haggard
Haggard
also struck out Ewing during his outing.
Christian Montgomery
Monty
struck out three in the 9th inning, but also allowed a solo blast to
Gomez, who was clearly the difference for Augusta in this game.
Miller went down swinging.
Davis went down swinging.
Winn went down swinging.
