Recapish
Although
they nearly blew it again, the 51s clawed back multiple times to finally pull
out a win in Reno Thursday night. The Aces torched Gabriel Ynoa for a season
high 5 runs over 6 innings, but the 51s went on a 6-1 run starting in the 9th
inning to win this game in extras.
For
Ynoa, this was as hard as he’s been hit all year. He didn’t walk anyone, but 2
of the 3 Reno triples really hurt his cause. Jack Reinheimer hit an RBI triple
and scored as the Aces jumped out 3-0 in the 3rd, and then Socrates
Brito tripled and scored after Las Vegas had just tied the game at 3 in the 6th.
Per gameday, 8 of 23 balls in play were classified as line drives, but I’m
guessing even more of the contact would’ve been classified as ‘hard hit.’
The
Aces added on against the overworked 51s pen in the 7th and 8th
inning, and they took a 7-3 lead to the 9th and sent former big
leaguer Matt Capps out to finish the game. Capps had nothing, which opened the
door for a 51s rally. I break down this rally in much more detail below, but
both Dilson Herrera and Brandon Nimmo provided two run hits in the frame, and
the 51s took an 8-7 lead into the bottom of the 9th.
Apparently
lefty Mike Freeman didn’t care how hard Josh Smoker was throwing in the 9th,
because he took a mid-90’s heater out to RF to tie the game right. Smoker then
K’d 3 while working around a pair of singles over the final two frames, but the
damage had been done.
Fortunately
for Smoker and the 51s, Roger Bernadina’s big day wasn’t over yet. Bernadina
had knocked in the tying run during the 6th inning rally, and lined
a single into CF during the 9th inning rally, but saved his best for
the 10th. He was waiting on a breaking ball from the lefty and did
not miss it, crushing it over the RF wall to give the 51s the 9-8 lead they’d
win by.
I
break down the scoring, defense, and pitching highlights below, so enjoy! This
series continues Friday night at 10:05 PM in Reno, with Sean Gilmartin (5-2,
3.92 ERA) scheduled to start, and Wally Backman crossing his fingers that the
lefty can go 9.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Dilson
Herrera started his big night with a leadoff single in the 1st
inning. With the hit-n-run on, Brandon Nimmo hit a one-hopper at the 2B bag,
which is exactly where Jack Reinheimer was already headed, so it led to an easy
double play.
Gavin
Cecchini picked up his hit leading off the 3rd inning.
T.J.
Rivera doubled home Dilson in the 6th inning, which got Las Vegas on
the board, and Roger Bernadina tied it with an RBI single that brought T.J.
home two batters later.
The
top of the 9th was a lot of fun. The 51s loaded the bases before an
out was recorded thanks to some poor control from Matt Capps, who walked 2
while throwing only 5 of 16 pitches for strikes. They traded an out for their
first run, but then re-loaded the bases for the 51s red-hot power hitter Travis
Taijeron, with a hard throwing left on the mound. Taijeron pulled a liner just
foul down the LF line on a 1-1 fastball at 93 MPH, and then swung through an 86
MPH changeup to go down swinging for out #2. Reno stayed with the lefty Sean
Hathaway for Dilson Herrera, and the count went to two strikes, but Dilson
lined a two run single into LF to make it a 7-6 game. But the 51s still had to
get the tying run home, which meant Nimmo had to come through against the tough
lefty. The count again went to two strikes, and again the 51s batter came
through, with Nimmo slapping a double just fair down the left field line to
bring home two runs, giving Las Vegas their first lead at 8-7.
Bernadina
led off the 10th with a homer to get that lead right back for Las
Vegas.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
It’s
not a great throw since it brought Krauss off the bag, but Cecchini had a
chance to show off his arm without that stupid setup in the 3rd
inning, and it had plenty on it.
