Recapish

The Columbia Fireflies brooms went unused Sunday against West Virginia, as the Power powered their way to a 5-2 win thanks to a big 3rd inning. After outscoring the Power 23-6 over the first 3 games of this series, the Fireflies couldn’t get anything going after the 1st inning in the finale.
Canelon worked out of a jam in the top of the 1st inning, and then Vinny Siena did his 1st inning thing to give Cola a 1-0 lead. After Canelon cruised through a clean 2nd, it looked like he was about to settle in for another strong start, but a pair of errors opened the door for the Power’s rally in the 3rd. Oddly enough, it was both members of the Fireflies battery that committed the errors, with Patrick Mazeika charged for a dropped foul error and Canelon charged for a fielding error on a bunt.
Mazeika’s error extending the AB for John Bormann, and he would come through with a single into CF. Who knows what Alfredo Reyes would’ve done had the out been made, but Canelon was able to strike him out during each of their next two matchups, so advantage Canelon. Those were the first two batters of the frame, but instead of facing Tito Polo with the bases empty and two outs, Canelon had to deal the dangerous batter with two on and nobody out. Polo would reach on an infield single to load the bases, and then Mitchell Tolman cleared the bases with a double to LF. Ke’Bryan Hayes would add an RBI double of his own to make it a 4-1 game before an out was finally record in the frame.
After Canelon allowed that double to Hayes, he settled down and went to work. He retired 15 of the final 16 Power batters, with his only mistake crushed for a no-doubter off the bat of Polo. Of the homers I’ve seen at Spirit Communications Park this (and the MiLB.tv coverage started late, so I’ve missed a few), Ivan Wilson has the only homer to go deeper than Polo’s.
The Fireflies were able to scratch out a 6th inning run with two outs after Mazeika kept the frame alive with his fifth double of the year, but it was far from enough. Johnny Magliozzi would take over for Canelon in the 8th and he retired all 6 Power batters he faced.
I break down the scoring, defense, and strikeout details with highlights below, so enjoy! The Fireflies welcome Rome into town for their final home series of the first half Monday night. Tyler Badamo (3-3, 3.84 ERA) is scheduled to make the 7:05 PM start for Cola, with Touki Toussaint (1-5, 5.51 ERA) set to go for the Braves.

MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights

For the 6,203,493rd time in a row, Vinny Siena led off the 1st inning with a hit and then came around to score a 1st inning run. With Kevin Kaczmarski getting a day of rest, it fell to Luis Ortega to bring home Siena this time.

Dash Winningham led off the 2nd inning with his first hit of the game but was erased on a Jeffrey Diehl GIDP.

Patrick Mazeika extended the 6th inning with a double pulled down the 1B line and then came around to score on Winningham’s second hit of the game.

The Fireflies final hit of the game was Joe Tuschak’s 8th double of the season.

MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights

David Thompson continues to look good (borderline very good) at 3B for the Fireflies, and he handled the 2nd out of the 2nd inning with no problems. He doesn’t have that power arm you sometimes see at the hot corner, but he gets plenty of zip on his throws for the position.

The J.C. Rodriguez rotation landed on shortstop for this game, and he made a nice play in the hole to finally record the first out in the 3rd inning.

Pitcher Coverage

Kevin Canelon

Canelon retired the first batter of the game on a fly out but then found himself in trouble when the next two batters singled. He was bailed out of the frame when Mitchell Tolman broke for 3B early and was easily picked off by Canelon. He then finished the frame with his first strikeout, getting Daniel Arribas to go down swinging.

After his long 3rd inning, Canelon came out with a clean and efficient 4th inning, which was capped by a strikeout of Alfredo Reyes.

Tito Polo led off the 5th inning with a no-doubter to LF against Canelon, showing easy power against for his 11th homer of the season – this guy will be gone once the All Star game is over! After that Canelon was perfect, retiring 9 straight before handing the ball off to Johnny Magliozzi. He added his third K of the night, getting Reyes again, this time swinging in the 7th.
