Homeruns

Luis Ortega hit his 2nd moon shot since joining the Fireflies on Monday in Rome.

The B-Mets bats finally started to break out in Erie this past week. It all started Tuesday night, and the B-Mets flexed some muscle in the 7th inning of that game. Both Matt Oberste (his 4th) and Stefan Sabol (his 2nd) went deep for Binghamton in the frame, though neither had any runners on for their blasts.

Brandon Nimmo missed some time with an upper body bruise at the end of May, but he hasn’t missed a beat since returning. He drove one 405’ to center field in his second AB Tuesday, and then launched one over the CF wall in the 8th inning.

It took 511 AB’s, but L.J. Mazzilli now has one Double-A homerun to his name – time for the floodgates to open? He went deep in the Erie finale Thursday afternoon.

Roger Bernadina is having a nice season for the Las Vegas 51s and provided one of the big hits in their win Thursday against Reno. The 51s took an 8-7 lead in the 9th thanks to a 5-run inning, but Reno tied it with a solo homerun in the bottom half. Bernadina got that run right back with a solo blast of his own leading off the 10th, and that run proved to be the difference.

Defense

Phillip Evans is having a resurgent season with the B-Mets this year, and is looking like he might at least be useful on a major league bench someday. He made a terrific diving stop on this play up the middle Monday.

L.J. Mazzilli hasn’t done too much since joining the B-Mets after his suspension ended last season, but he’s been making nice plays in the field at 2B, and is finally starting break out at the plate. He’s hitting .410/.455/.590 over his last dozen games, with 4 doubles, the homerun, and 7 K: 4 BB.

It seems like Milton Ramos makes this section every week! He has been a lot of fun to watch defensively, and I’m excited to see how long the 2016 highlight reel will be for him!

Pitching

The Mets drafted Andrew Cody Church out of Basic HS in Las Vegas with their 3rd round pick of the 2013 draft. He wasn’t eligible to pitch for his high school team during his junior and senior season, so he just played travel ball. Since being drafted, he had made 31 appearances (25 starts) between rookie ball with Kingsport and the GCL Mets and low-A with Brooklyn, and there had been few reports on him. He would’ve also been pitching plenty in XST and Fall Instructs, but there are even fewer reports from those camps. My point being, I had no idea what to expect from Andrew Church when he made his first start for Columbia two weeks ago, but I definitely didn’t expect this through 2 starts: 12.2 IP, 9 H, 2 R (1 ER), 15 K: 0 BB. Scouts in Rome told me they had him at 92-94 MPH throughout the start, and he’s shown excellent command of that heat so far. His slider also looks like a potential weapon, so BOLO for Church to be high on Mets prospect lists this winter.
His 6 K's from Monday in Rome

Logan Taylor struck out 7 over 4 IP (16 batters faced) last week. He has multiple K’s in 5 straight appearances, 9 of his last 10, and 12 of his last 14. The 42 total K’s are good for a 34.4 K% over his last 29.2 IP, during which time he has a 2.73 ERA, has allowed 25 hits, and has walked 12. The walks were a little high earlier in the year, but he’s already showing improvements in that area – he has 10 straight appearances with no more than 1 walk issued.
His 4 K’s from Tuesday:

Casey Delgado had everything working for him when he faced Erie Wednesday night, and it led to his best start of the year, and the 2nd best start of his Mets minor league career – he went nuts against the Green Jackets last August.
