Recapish

The Columbia Fireflies blew an unbelievable start from P.J. Conlon Saturday night, falling 2-1 to the Hagerstown Suns in 12 innings. Conlon allowed just an unearned run over 10 of those innings, and he took a no-hitter into the 7th inning. Hagerstown moved to 36-19 as they finished off the sweep of the Fireflies, who drop to 28-28.
Conlon has been pitching at a level way too advanced for the SAL this entire season, but this was something else. The one mistake he made ended up costing him, but it wasn’t even a bad pitch. Conlon made a bad throw to 1B in the 5th inning, and his error opened the door for a Hagerstown run without the need for a hit. Rhett Wiseman would go to 2B on the throwing error and eventually come home on a sac fly from Austin Davidson.
In total, Conlon faced just 3 batters over the minimum over his 10 innings, and averaged less than 10 pitches/inning, which is just silly. He would have to deal with a baserunner in each of his last 4 frames, but the Fireflies turned a pair of double plays behind him to help keep that pitch count down. The MiLB gameday data didn’t upload correctly, but you can check out the consistent efficiency in Table 1 below.
As good as Conlon was, Hagerstown starter Jefry Rodriguez was matching him 0 for 0. David Thompson doubled off him in the 1st inning, and Luis Ortega reached on an infield single in the 2nd, but then he held the Fireflies hitless until the 7th. Thompson broke that streak and the shutout bid when he pulled Columbia even with a solo blast in the 7th. Thompson nearly ended this game in the 9th, but the ball was pulled just a little to the left of the foul poll.
Alex Palsha took over for Conlon in the 11th and made quick work of the Suns in the frame, but couldn’t work around a bad call from the ump in the 12th. Victor Robles, the top prospect on the Suns, led off the inning by hitting a sinking liner into CF that deflected off the palm of a diving Ivan Wilson’s glove for a double. Wilson got glove on it, but he was diving forward and it would’ve been another Juan Lagares-level catch. Robles never slowed down on the play, but the Fireflies actually recovered the ball and got it in to Palsha at 2B ahead of him. Unfortunately Palsha didn’t catch the ball originally, but Robles overslid the bag, and Palsha was able to recover and tag him out. Well, that’s what the replay shows, as you can see below, but that’s not what the ump saw, as he called Robles safe at 2B.
Before Palsha took the mound in the 12th there was a catcher change. Jose Garcia had to leave mid-AB in the 11th, and Luis Ortega was moved behind the plate for his first official pro action as a catcher since 2014 with Kingsport. Patrick Mazeika was the DH for the game, and I guess Manager Jose Leger didn’t want to forfeit the role by switching him in.
The Fireflies get a much-needed day off Sunday as they head to Augusta to open a series with the Green Jackets. Andrew Church (2-0, 0.71 ERA) is scheduled to start in the opener in Augusta on Monday, and the game starts on 7:05 PM, although it won’t be on MiLB.tv. I hope to visit the Fireflies when they travel to Augusta sometime in the future, but it’s a long enough drive that I wouldn’t want to do so without a hotel stay, so maybe next year.

MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights

David Thompson picked up his 17th double of the year with two outs in the 1st inning. He would lead off the bottom of the 7th with a solo blast to LF and then nearly went deep in the 9th inning, yanking it just a few feet foul.

Luis Ortega hit a one out single into CF in the 10th.

MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights

Kevin Kaczmarski made a nice sliding catch for the first out of the game.

P.J. Conlon made a pair of nice plays in this game – he had a Bartolo Colon-like casualness about him in the way he flipped the ball to himself after fielding the one hopper in the 2nd inning.

David Thompson started a 5-4-3 double play to end the 3rd inning. It was the first of four double plays turned, the most unconventional of which came in the 12th, with Dash Winningham making the turn.

Vinny Siena ranged to his right to field this grounder up the middle in the 4th.

Alex Palsha made sure Robles couldn’t get back to second base in the 12th, but the ump still called him safe.

Suns left fielder Telmitto Agustin minded the rails in foul territory down the LF line to make a nice play in the 8th.
