Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies got back to .500 Thursday night with a dominating win over
the West Virginia Power on ‘Purple Game’ night in Columbia. The Fireflies were
honoring the memory of Prince by wearing purple jerseys – and doing everything
up purple, as you’ll see in the highlights – and I think they did him proud by
kicking the opposition’s butt!
Cola
starter Chase Ingram didn’t have his best command throughout the start Thursday
night, but he held the Power to just 1 run on 4 hits over his 6 innings of
work, which was more than enough to earn him a victory. The 4 walks match a
season high for Ingram, but the 4 hits allowed matches the second lowest amount
for a start all season. He dealt with trouble throughout the start, finishing
with only one clean inning, but he was able to buckle down with runners in
scoring position, allowing just the one hit for a Logan Hill RBI double in the
4th.
The
Fireflies offense was clicking out of the gates, as they jumped out to a 3-0
lead as the first out was being recorded on a sac fly. The Power starter Gage
Hinsz was able to settled down and put up 4 straight scoreless frames after
that, but the floodgates opened in the 6th. J.C. Rodriguez and David
Thompson were involved in most of the scoring opportunities for Columbia,
though nearly everyone joined the hit party.
Seth
Davis and Chrisitian Montgomery combined for 3 K’s over the final 3 innings to
hold on to the win. I break down the scoring, defense, and Ingram highlights
below, so enjoy! This series continues Friday night at 7:05 PM, with P.J.
Conlon (7-1, 1.21 ERA) scheduled to start for the Fireflies coming off a 10-inning
performance!
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Vinny
Siena got the Fireflies started in the 1st with a leadoff single to
RF. Siena would steal 2B and then score on Kevin Kaczmarski’s first hit of the
game. Kaczmarski would also steal 2B, though he ended up at 3B after a throwing
error. Kacz came home on a double off the bat of J.C. Rodriguez, which prompted
a pitching coach visit for the Power. On the 1st pitch after the
visit, David Thompson surprised everyone by dropping down a beauty of a bunt
for the single. The next 3 Cola batters would be retired in order, but they would
add one more run in the frame on a sac fly for Luis Ortega.
After
staying quiet from the 2nd through the 5th innings, the
Fireflies bats would get hot over their final 3 trips to the plate. J.C. led
off the 6th with a single lined into RF and then scored on David
Thompson’s 19th double of the year. Thompson would come home on
Ortega’s second sac fly of the game to make it a 5-1 game. Dash Winningham
added his first hit of the game in the frame.
Kaczmarski
singled in the 7th inning but this time he was thrown out trying to
steal 2B. J.C. tagged his 4th bomb of the year to RF shortly after
the caught stealing.
The
Fireflies final rally of the night was started with a Luis Ortega walk. Dash
and Joe Tuschak followed with RBI doubles, which prompted a double-switch that
brought former Mets farmhand Alfredo Reyes into the game. Cola would add 3 more
in the frame on singles off the bats of Tyler Moore, Vinny Siena, and David
Thompson.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
David
Thompson has made a web gem at the hot corner nearly every week for the
Fireflies this season, and this week’s submission came on the first pitch last
night. Dash Winningham was way off the bag for the last out of the second inning.

Ingram finished with 4 strikeouts on the night:
Logan Hill went down swinging for the 2nd out of
the 2nd inning.
With a runner on 3B and one out in the 3rd,
Ingram got Mitchell Tolman to swing through strike 3.
The Power had two on with one out for Daniel Arribas in the
5th inning, but he watched strike 3 fall in for a big 2nd
out.
Ingram ended his night on a high note by striking out Tyler
Filliben to end the 6th inning.
