Recapish
The
‘Cardiac Kids’ held on during a PCL slugfest in Reno Wednesday night, winning
their 5th straight game by the final of 12-10. That’s 51s announcer
Russ Langer’s moniker for the team when they are involved in this see-saw PCL
slugfests, which seem to happen at least once a week and are always
entertaining.
After
the Bartolo Colon early departure domino effect led to a bullpen
start Tuesday, the 51s were hoping Duane Below could give them some serious
length Wednesday. Unfortunately he had to leave with one out and Reno temporarily
taking the game over in the 6th. Per Langer, he had been dealing
with a cut on his pitching hand during his last start, which affected the grip
on his cutter (because of course it did). Langer wasn’t sure if the cut on
Below’s hand had healed fully in time for the start, so he might not have had
his full repertoire available again.
The
51s fell behind 1-0 in the 1st but then scored the next 5 runs of
the game to take control. Dilson Herrera hit his 20th double of the
season in the 3rd and Brandon Nimmo added his 7th triple
of the season in the 4th, which is tied for best in the PCL. The 51s
added a run in the 6th without the benefit of a hit, but that’s
hardly a success when you start the frame by loading the bases before an out is
recorded. Still, they were handing a 5-1 lead to their starter for the bottom
of the 6th.
Below had been pretty effective
over the first 5 innings, but was on base twice and out there for a while both
times during that span. He was thrown out at home as part of a 462 double play
to end the top of the 6th, and then struggled when he took the mound
in the bottom half.
Jeff Walters took over for Below
with two runners on base and allowed them both to come home. Despite his high
ERA, it was the first time he had allowed an inherited runner to score all
season. The Aces finished the frame suddenly ahead 6-5.
The game remained that way until
the 51s came through with the bases loaded in both the 8th and 9th
innings. Brandon Nimmo picked up 3 RBI’s on two oppo taco singles during the
final two frames of the game, but the biggest hit of the night was Dilson
Herrera’s grand slam in the 8th. It was Dilson’s 11th
homerun and his 2nd grand slam of the season.
The Aces added runs against Josh
Edgin and Paul Sewald over their final two chances, but they couldn’t close the
gap. After allowing a long solo blast to Mitch Haniger with two outs in the 9th,
Sewald buckled down and struck out Ed Lucas to end the game.
I break down the 51s scoring
details with highlights below, and added the Josh Edgin strikeouts at the
bottom, so enjoy! This series continues in Reno Thursday night at 10:05 PM, with
Gabriel Ynoa (8-3, 3.45 ERA) scheduled to start for the 51s.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
A
fielding error by shortstop Jack Reinheimer opened the door for the B-Mets
first run of the game in the 2nd. Marc Krauss brought home Travis
Taijeron with an RBI single into RF.
Gavin
Cecchini led off the 3rd inning with a single and came around to
score on Dilson Herrera’s 20th double of the season. Brandon Nimmo
had walked in between the two and would come home on a groundout.
Niuman
Romero doubled and scored on a double play in the 4th inning.
Brandon Nimmo also picked up his 7th triple of the season in the
frame.
The
51s loaded the bases on 3 straight walks to open the 6th inning but
could only score one run in the frame.
They
loaded the bases again in the 8th inning on two walks and a Cecchini
single. Brandon Nimmo followed with a game tying single and then Dilson Herrera
hit the game-changing grand slam, which was his 11th homer of the
season.
They
loaded the bases one last time in the 9th inning, and this time
Brandon Nimmo came through with a two run single this time.
