Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies dropped their second straight at home Monday night as they
welcomed the Rome Braves into town. Rome starter Touki Toussaint took a perfect
game into the 6th, but Cola outfielder Joe Tuschak ended that and
his shutout bid with one powerful swing to RF.
It
was a mixed outing for Fireflies starter Tyler Badamo, as he matched a career
high with 6 strikeouts while inducing a lot of swinging strikes, but he also
allowed 4 runs on 11 hits. His
breaking ball was generally more loopy than normal throughout the start, and it looked
like his changeup was an effective pitch for him throughout the start.
The
Braves jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd on back-to-back doubles
from Wigberto Nevarez and Bradley Keller. That should’ve been it for Rome in
the frame, but Ray-Patrick Didder just barely beat out an infield hit to knock
in a second run with two outs.
He
might’ve escaped the 5th unharmed, but Vinny Siena threw a potential
double play grounder away, which allowed Didder to come around and make it a
3-0 game. The Braves would add another run in the 6th to make it a
4-0 lead before the Fireflies even had a baserunner.
Touki
was working at a quick pace and had good control of his good heater and nice
curve. This was his fourth start against Columbia this season and easily his
best. The Fireflies had struggled to make solid contact against Touki in their
last two meeting, but he struggled with control, issuing 9 walks across 10 innings.
Reliever
Christian Montgomery worked the final two frames for Columbia and looked as
good as I’ve seen him this season. He allowed a leadoff single to Justin
Ellison, but Ellison would be thrown out at 3B in the frame, and Monty retired
the other 5 Rome batters in a row, with 4 K’s along the way.
Check
out the Fireflies scoring, defense, and pitching highlights from this game
below! This series continues Tuesday night at 7:05 PM, with Joe Shaw (3-4, 4.24
ERA) set to square off with 18-year old Mike Soroka (1-5, 2.59 ERA). It should
be another pitcher’s duel between these two clubs, as the young hurler has
looked very sharp against the Fireflies this season, though his Rome teammates
have given him no run support.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
The
Fireflies didn’t get their first hit until the 7th, but it was a big
one. Joe Tuschak launched his 2nd homer of the season and 9th
of his career to end the perfect game bid from Touki.
Ivan
Wilson and David Thompson each ripped a single to LF after the seal was broken.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Plays
to share from around the infield for this game:
Vinny Siena in the 1st
Tyler Badamo in the 2nd
Several examples of Milton Ramos
Patrick Mazeika caught Rome baserunners trying to steal 3B
twice - 2 angles on the second one
Dash Winningham snared a liner and stepped on the 1B bag for
an inning ending double play in the 6th.
Pitcher Coverage
Tyler Badamo
Badamo
recorded one strikeout in each of the first 6 innings and was inducing swinging
strikes at a great rate. There was no MiLB gameday for an official count, but I
don’t think I missed any below!
Christian Montgomery
Monty
struck out one Rome batter while working around a leadoff single in the 8th
inning, and then he struck out the side in the 9th.
Looking back, looking forward. I'm leaving Mars' Naukluft Plateau, going higher up Mt Sharp https://t.co/QEXO4LzSZ3 pic.twitter.com/UDQACGfa9S— Curiosity Rover (@MarsCuriosity) June 14, 2016
