Recapish
The
hits finally started falling for the B-Mets in their Tuesday night opener
against Erie, and then they never stopped, as Binghamton kept tacking on until
they ran out of outs. Binghamton starter Robert Gsellman wasn’t at his
sharpest, but he was able to get the big outs when he needed them outside of the
3rd inning. Logan Taylor and Akeel Morris were very sharp over the
final 3 innings, picking up 6 K’s as they finished off the Sea Wolves. Jayce
Boyd was activated before the game and made his 2016 debut in LF while batting
third.
Gsellman
really had to battle through the first 3 innings, when he threw 2/3 of his
pitches and surrendered the B-Mets early 1-0 lead. He stranded runners on the
corners in the 1st inning but would have no such luck in the 3rd.
With one out and Harold Castro on 2B, four Sea Wolves batters reached safely
for a pair of runs. Jacoby Jones provided the big hit when he doubled off the
wall in LF for the first run. Gsellman then issued a walk and HBP before Casey
Frawley knocked in the second run on a single to Jayce Boyd in LF. Erie was
still threatening with the bases loaded, but the B-Mets turned a 4-6-3 double
play behind Gsellman to end the frame.
Binghamton
then scored at least one run in each of their final six trips to the plate,
making this game a laugher by the end. The double play started a streak of 9
straight set down by Gsellman, and he left after 6 with his team comfortably
ahead 6-2.
I
break down the B-Mets scoring and good pitching with highlights below, so
enjoy! This series continues Wednesday night at 6:35 PM, with Casey Delgado
(2-2, 4.79 ERA) scheduled to make his 5th start of the year, and the
bats looking to keep the good feels going.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
The
B-Mets struck first with a run on three straight singles and a sac fly in the 2nd
inning. Maikis De La Cruz, Xorge Carrillo, and Stefan Sabol loaded them up, and
L.J. Mazzilli hit the fly ball to CF.
Matt
Oberste led off the 4th with a single and eventually came around to
score on a Sabol groundout. The B-Mets ran a successful hit-and-run play with
Carrillo at the plate in the frame, which led to the X-Man’s second hit of the
game.
Dominic
Smith singled home Derrik Gibson for the B-Mets 5th inning run.
The
B-Mets put up a 3-spot in the 6th thanks to a rally that was driven
by a pair of doubles: Sabol’s fourth of the year got things started, and
Phillip Evans doubled home two in the frame.
Binghamton
muscled up with a pair of solo blast in the 7th inning: Oberste led
off the frame with an oppo taco shot, and Sabol hit one three batters later to
come within a triple of the cycle.
Jayce
Boyd beat out an infield single for his first hit of the year with two outs in
the 8th, and that opened the door for another Binghamton rally.
Oberste singled him home two batters later, and Maikis followed with an RBI
double.
Evans
capped the scoring with an RBI double in the 9th to bring home
Derrik Gibson, who had a big 4-hit night for the B-Mets. It was the second
double of the night for Evans, and his sixth of the year.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Phillip
Evans and L.J. Mazzilli both had a chance to show off their arm strength in
this one. They also combined for an inning ending double play in the 4th.
