Recapish

The Columbia Fireflies were outhit by a large margin Tuesday night in Rome, but it’s the final score that matters, and they finished ahead 4-3 for a second straight win. Cola starter Kevin Canelon allowed most of those Rome hits and all of their runs, but he and then pen combined to do just enough for the win.
The Braves struck first when Carlos Castro led off the 2nd inning with a solo blast to CF. The homerun was Castro’s first of the year and it would be the only extra base hit for Rome in the game. They made it 2-0 on Austin Riley’s RBI single with two outs in the 3rd inning.
The Fireflies then turned this game around with 4 runs over their next two trips to the plate, which you can read about and watch in the highlights section below!
After allowing the hit to Riley in the 3rd, Canelon settled in to retired 9 of the next 10 batters, which took him to the end of the 6th. He was off the mound by the time the final run was charged to him in the 7th inning, as Christian Montgomery had taken over. Monty stranded the bases loaded in the 7th, ending the Rome threat with a strikeout of Austin Riley.
Alex Palsha would take over for Montgomery when walks got him into the trouble during the 8th inning. Palsha stayed on for the 9th and picked up his seventh save of the year, which is fourth most in the SAL.
This series wraps up with a matinee Wednesday. Tyler Badamo (2-3, 3.47 ERA) is scheduled to make the 1 PM start for Columbia, and the Fireflies will have the brooms ready in Rome.

MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights

With Rome’s assistance, David Thompson manufactured the Fireflies first run of the game. He worked a two out walk against Touki, stole 2B, went to 3B on Jonathan Moreles’ throwing error, and then scored on Austin Riley’s throwing error.

Just like Monday, the Fireflies won this game on the back of a big inning, though this time it would be during the 5th. Dash Winningham sparked the rally with a leadoff walk, though he’d be forced out at 3B two batters later. With two outs in the frame, Vinny Siena worked a walk to load the bases for Kevin Kaczmarski, and he yanked the game changing double into right center field.

Dash Winningham picked up his first triple of the year lead off the 7th inning, but the next 3 Cola batters went down on K’s to strand him at 3B.
