Recapish
The
Binghamton Mets had everything working for them Tuesday night, but a long 6th
inning pulled the Curve to within a run, and then Altoona walked off with a rally
in the 9th. B-Mets starter Josh Zeid was very effective over the
first 5 innings, but the 6th was an entirely different story.
Binghamton still held a lead when they handed the ball off to closer Beck
Wheeler in the 9th, but Wheeler just couldn’t get the final strike,
allowing a two out walkoff double to Jose Osuna, which put an end to
Binghamton’s 4-game winning streak.
The
only strike against B-Mets starter Josh Zeid over the first 5 innings was a
solo blast allowed to Anderson Feliz in the 2nd. He faced just one
more over the minimum during the first 4 innings, and worked around a pair of
base runners in the 5th.
In
addition to top-prospects Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith, the Binghamton Mets
lineup featured rehabbing Juan Lagares and recently signed Jose Reyes, though
neither played all 9 innings. Reyes went hitless, but Lagares singled to spark
the 3rd inning rally. Rosario doubled Lagares to 3B to give that 3rd
inning rally legs, and he added a two run single in the 6th. Last
but certainly not least, Dominic Smith got the scoring started with a solo
blast to deep CF leading off the 2nd.
Thanks
to an efficient approach and the outburst from his offense, Zeid took a 7-1
lead into the 6th on just 71 pitches. But the first three would
reach and score against him by the time the first out of the inning was
recorded. He was able to get the second out of the frame, but then Feliz
singled to keep the inning alive and Barrett Barnes doubled him home – easy to
second guess, but it seemed like Zeid should’ve been taken out after the Feliz
hit.
The
game remained 7-6 until the 9th, when Binghamton closer Beck Wheeler
was asked to work for a second straight day, which is much less common in the
minors (at least within the Mets system). Wheeler would get no help from his
defense during the frame, with errors from Maikis De La Cruz and L.J. Mazzilli allowing
Curve baserunners to take an extra base. Osuna was up next and he fell behind
0-2 before doubling home the winning run on a fly ball to the right center
field warning track.
I
break down the scoring details with highlights below, and have including defense
and strikeout highlights at the bottom, so enjoy! This series wraps up
Wednesday night at 6:35 PM, with Mickey Jannis (2-7, 5.45 ERA) scheduled to
start for the B-Mets.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Dominic
Smith led off the 2nd inning with his seventh homer of the season.
Xorge Carrillo singled two batters later and then came around to score on
back-to-back two out hits from L.J. Mazzilli and Josh Zeid.
Juan
Lagares led off the 3rd inning with a single and went to 3B on Amed
Rosario’s third double since joining Binghamton. Smith was then hit by a pitch
to load the bases for Jayce Boyd. Boyd had to settle for an RBI groundout, but
the B-Mets weren’t done in the 3rd yet. A walk to Carrillo re-loaded
the bases for Maikis De La Cruz, who brought home the B-Mets fourth run of the
game with a single into RF. Binghamton made it 5-1 when Smith scored on a sac
fly from Mazzzilli.
Boyd
picked up a hit in the 5th.
Mazzilli
sparked the B-Mets final rally with a leadoff single in the 6th. Binghamton
loaded the bases for Rosario in the frame and he brought home two with a single
to LF. The B-Mets left the bases loaded in the frame, but they were up 7-1, so
they appeared to be in good standing.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Jose
Reyes couldn’t handle the one hot shot hit to him at 3B.
Dominic
Smith had to go down to make this lay in he 3rd.
Amed
Rosario started a double play in the 5th inning.
The
B-Mets nearly turned a game-ending double play in the 9th, but
Mazzilli’s throw was well wide, which allowed the tying run to come around and
score before the walkoff hit. He did make a pair of nice plays earlier in the game though.
