Recapish

The final line will say that the Brooklyn Cyclones committed just one error in their loss against State College Wednesday night, but there were multiple other defensive miscues that opened the door for the Spikes early runs. The Cyclones were able to battle back and momentarily had the upper hand after Brandon Brosher hit a grand slam in the 7th. Unfortunately that lead didn’t last long, which left Brooklyn playing extra inning baseball for the fifth time already in 13 games. They managed a baserunner in both extra frames, but the Spikes struck first, winning on a walkoff HBP with the bases loaded – I think it looked like the batter moved his leg towards the pitch.
The Cyclones jumped ahead 1-0 in the 1st, though it should’ve been more. In total, they went 2-3 with 2 walks in the 1st inning, but a double play and a runner thrown out at 3B cut short any rally.
Merandy Gonzalez was tagged for five runs in the 1st, but the Cyclones defense forced him to essentially earn 6 outs in the frame. The leadoff batter hit a soft liner right at Dale Burdick, but he appeared to lose the ball in the sun (which was setting), allowing it to drop in for an infield hit instead. Dylan Tice followed with a monster shot to RF facing Merandy from the stretch.
But the 1st inning miscues weren’t done. The next batter hit a grounder right at 1B Darryl Knight, but he missed fielding it, so Vincent Jackson ended up on 2B with a double. Next up was Ryan McCarvel, and he’d become the first out for Merandy G. After losing a batter to a walk, Merandy allowed a few more hard hit balls from the stretch. Two of the three balls in play went for RBI hits, but he also recorded the second out of the frame.
But the 1st inning miscues weren’t done. The #9 hitter was next, and Anthony Ray hit a grounder towards the right side. Knight, an inexperienced first baseman, ranged well off the bag to field the ball, even cutting off teammate Dale Burdick to field it. Instead of waiting for a throw at the 1B bag, Knight had to throw to Merandy on the run, and the throw was late and well behind him.
As you can see below, I couldn’t really tell what Gonzalez was throwing from the MiLB.tv camera angle. The Spikes announcer was very impressed with his curve, but noted that he had little control of his fastball in the 1st inning. He did end up allowing some loud contact in the 1st, but who knows how his start would’ve turned out had the weak contact been turned into outs sooner.
Dillon Becker took over in the 3rd after the Cyclones got a run back, and he also felt the burn from a big defensive miscue. He walked the first two batters he faced out of the pen, but then retired the next two on foul pop outs to Tiberi near the line. The next batter Jackson gave the ball a ride to RF, but Arnaldo Berrios appeared to have a beat on the ball. He turned around just shy of the warning track as if he had it lined up, but then appeared to lose his bearings with respect to the wall, and it landed just behind him for a two run double.
Berrios did his best to make up for the runs that scored on that play, knocking in two for Brooklyn with a single in the 6th. It was still just a 7-4 game after that, but the Cyclones would ride that scoring momentum into the 7th. They loaded the bases for one out against Greg Tomchick and Brandon Brosher hit a game-changing grand slam to give Brooklyn an 8-7 lead.
But the lead would not last long, and Brooklyn’s momentum was gone. The teams alternated zeros until the 11th, when State College took a walkoff win on a HBP with the bases loaded.
I break down the scoring details and defensive highlights below, so enjoy! This series wraps up Thursday night at 7:05 PM, with Joel Hueras scheduled to start for Brooklyn. The Cyclones can pull back to .500 with a win!

Missing Gene Cone

Gene Cone led off the game with a walk and then went to 3B on Jacob Zanon’s hit, which put runners on the corners with no outs for Jay Jabs. Jabs had a multi-hit game but he’d ground into a double play in this AB, although Cone was able to score on the play. Colby Woodmansee extended the inning with a walk and then Blake Tiberi picked up his first hit of the game, but Woodmansee was out by a mile trying to reach 3B on the hit.

Brandon Brosher and Arnaldo Berrios started the 2nd inning with back-to-back singles, but another double play cut short any potential rally.

Trailing 5-1, Jay Jabs started the Cyclones comeback by tripling and scoring with two outs in the 3rd inning. Woodmansee came through with the two out single to bring Jabs home, reaching on an infield single thanks to a wide throw from shortstop Tommy Edman.

After a pitching change, Gene Cone picked up his first hit of the game in the 5th.

Berrios put another dent into the Spikes lead when he brought home two with a single into CF during the 6th inning.

With one out in the 7th, Jabs and Woodmansee singled and then a walk to Tiberi loaded the bases for Brandon Brosher. Cyclones Manager Tom Gamboa has compared Brosher’s power to Mike Piazza’s in the past, and he showed a glimpse of that while crushing a grand slam to left field. The blast was Brosher’s first of the year and suddenly put Brooklyn up 8-7.

Cone, Brosher, and Tiberi each added a single over the final four frames of the game, but the Cyclones were unable to add on before State College walked off with a win.
