Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies finished their final homestand of the first half with a win
over Rome in the rubbermatch of their 3-game series. As with almost every
matchup between these two teams this year, this game was a pitcher’s duel for
most of the night. A wild play went the Fireflies way and led to 3 runs in the
6th, and then big Jeff Diehl came through with a big RBI hit in the
8th right after the Braves had charged back to tie it.
Columbia
starter Chase Ingram had arguably his best start of the season, as his stuff
was crisp and near the zone all night. As best as I can remember, there were
only two well-struck balls against him: Justin Ellison lined a triple to RF
against him in the 2nd and Luke Dykstra flied out to deep CF in the
4th. He retired 10 straight after the Ellison triple, and the hit to
break up the streak came on a bunt single.
As
good as Ingram was, Braves starter Patrick Weigel was matching him 0 for 0,
until the 6th. The Fireflies loaded the bases in the 6th
and then all 3 runs came home on a play that featured two throwing errors. See
it for yourself below, but Dash Winningham’s chopper led to a bad throw, the
catcher recovered but made a bad throw, and then no one was covering when Luis
Ortega chose to bust it home. Potentially troubling for Columbia, Dash
Winningham left for a pinch runner after the play, and it wasn’t clear why.
Handed
a 3-0 lead, Ingram went out for the 7th and had a very strong frame.
He picked up 2 strikeouts in the inning and worked around Milton Ramos’ second
error of the game. Both were fielding errors on plays he should’ve made, but
he’s been very good and consistent this season, so I’m not too concerned.
Ingram
would head out to work the 8th inning but left after hitting
Ray-Patrick Didder with 2 outs and 95 pitches thrown. The usually reliable Seth
Davis was brought in to finish things off, but he instead blew the lead. Austin
Riley knocked in 2 with a double to CF and then the tying run came home on an
E5 – Thompson couldn’t barehand a dribbler.
It
wouldn’t take long for the Fireflies to get the lead back, as Jeff Diehl
knocked in the go-ahead run with two outs in the bottom half of the 8th.
Manager Jose Leger then went to Alex Palsha for the save, and Palsha converted
for his 10th of the season, picking up 2 K’s along the way.
With
this series over the Fireflies are off to Asheville to open a series with the
Tourists. P.J. Conlon (8-1, 1.34 ERA) is scheduled to make the start Thursday
night, with game time set for 7:05 PM. It should be his last start in a
Fireflies, though he should have one more start in a Fireflies jersey after
this: the SAL All Star game.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Milton
Ramos picked up a two out single in the 2nd inning.
Patrick
Mazeika led off the 5th with a single into RF but would be stranded
on 2B in the frame.
Kevin
Kaczmarski led off the 6th inning with a single and came around to
score on a wild play. Aside from the poor throws, the key part of the play is
that nobody goes back to cover home and stop that third run from scoring.
Jeffrey
Diehl came through with the big RBI hit in the 8th to knock in Joe
Tuschak after he led off the inning with a walk.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
David
Thompson and Milton Ramos each started a double play Wednesday night. Thompson
was busy at 3B and generally had a good day. A couple of his throws were light
early, but Dash did a good job to pick one of them out of the dirt. Ivan Wilson had a long way to run for his catch in the fourth.

*16.8% Swinging strike rate; 34% Whiff/Swing rate
Ingram
struck out the first batter of the game and then worked around a Milton Ramos
error in the 1st.
He
struck out Alejandro Salazar to strand Ellison at 3B in the 2nd inning.
After
inducing 3 straight groundouts during a very quick 3rd inning,
Ingram picked up his third K while working another clean frame in the 4th,
this time he got Austin riley swinging.
Salazar
reached on a two out single and stole 2B in the 5th inning, but
Ingram ignored him and struck out Leudys Baez to end the threat.
Ingram
issued a walk and hit a batter in the 6th, but he got out of the
frame unscored upon. He then struck out Ellison and got Salazar again in the 7th inning.
Alex Palsha
Palsha
struck out Lucas Herbert and Leudys Baez while working a perfect 9th
inning.
