Recapish
Columbia
locals were treated to a preview of the SAL All-Star game Friday night, as the expected starters P.J. Conlon and Mitch
Keller squared up for their penultimate starts of the first half. Conlon
outpitched Keller, taking a shutout into the 7th as his teammates
gave him a 4-0 lead.
For
the second straight night, the Fireflies bats came out ready to go, and they
would build up their lead early. Also for the second straight night, Vinny
Siena scored before an out was recorded on an RBI single from Kevin Kaczmarski.
Siena and Kacz both tripled into the RF corner during the game with help from
the Power right fielder, who was having trouble with the side walls over there.
Thompson also doubled into the RF corner for his 20th double of the
season in his 49th game, which is just 7 shy of the top total posted
by a Sand Gnats player last season, when Wuilmer Becerra had 27 in 118 games.
Conlon
faced the minimum over the first 3 and rarely had to work from the stretch over
the first 6 innings. It wasn’t until there were two outs in the 7th
that the Power broke through against Conlon, knocking him out of the game on
back-to-back RBI hits from Tyler Filliben and former Cyclones teammate Alfredo
Reyes.
Craig
Missigman took over for Conlon with two on in the 7th and struck out
Logan Ratledge to end the threat. Apparently Conlon was pacing in the dugout as
Missigman set to cleaning up his mess, and then first in line waiting to say
congrats to Missigman after the reliever finished the job. Missigman issued a
pair of walks in the 8th, which prompted Alex Palsha to get up a
little earlier than expected, but a 643 double play ended any threat before a
pitching change was needed. Palsha worked a perfect 9th, although he
had some help from Siena and Kacz, as you can see below.
I
break the scoring details down below with highlights, so enjoy! This series
continues Saturday night at 7:05 PM, with Gaby Almonte set to make his season
debut for the Fireflies. Almonte is a 23-year old righty from the DR who was a
NYPL All-Star with Brooklyn last year, and who wasn’t overmatched in his only
SAL start of 2015. He doesn’t have much of a fastball, topping out around
90 MPH, but his breaking ball has been an effective pitch when he can control
it.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Vinny
Siena led off the bottom of the 1st with a triple and was brought
home quickly thanks to a single from Kevin Kaczmarski – these two combined for
a run in the 1st last night too.
Siena
sparked the 3rd inning rally too, this time with a leadoff single.
Kaczmarski would follow with a walk this time, and both eventually came around
to score on David Thompson’s 20th double of the season.
Ivan
Wilson doubled with two outs in the 4th inning but would be thrown
out trying to extend the hit into a triple.
Kavin
Kaczmarski made it to 3B with a triple in the 5th inning, and then
he came home on a wild pitch.
Dash
Winningham picked up his 17th double of the season with one out in
the 6th inning.
Kaczmarski
finished his perfect night at the plate with a single in the 7th.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
