Recapish
The
Binghamton Mets slide continued Wednesday night as they dropped their second
straight to the Curve. Altoona jumped ahead big early against B-Mets starter
Rainy Lara, and then Binghamton proceeded to waste numerous opportunities for
big innings. They got 17 runners on base – 10 hits, 6 walks, and 1 HBP – but
only 3 came around to score, which has been the story for the B-Mets in 2016.
This
outing was particularly frustrating for Rainy Lara, who had put together one of
his best stretches in Double-A over the past month, and was his own worst enemy
Wednesday night. He allowed all three 1st inning runs with two outs
and he walked in a run during the 2nd inning. Coming into the start,
Lara had a 1.86 ERA with just a .525 OPS allowed over his previous 5 starts (29
IP), so hopefully this is just a hiccup. This was the 4th time in 13
starts that Lara has allowed more than 3 runs.
Despite
the hole Lara dug Binghamton, they B-Mets had plenty of chances to start
scratching away, but they just stink at hitting with runners in scoring
position this season. They left two on in the 1st, had a runner thrown
out at 2B for the final out of the 2nd (would’ve been bases loaded),
left a runner at 2B in the 3rd, left the bases loaded in the 4th,
left two on in the 5th, runners on the corners in the 7th,
and Smith at 1B after he led off the 9th with a single. That’s just
ugly. And the final three B-Mets went down swinging to end the game.
I
break down the few scoring details and how they got all those scoring
opportunities with highlights below, so enjoy! This series wraps up Thursday
evening at 6:35 PM, with Josh Zeid (1-1, 3.65 ERA) scheduled to start for
Binghamton.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
L.J.
Mazzilli led off the bottom of the 1st with a single and stole 2B,
but the B-Mets couldn’t get him home from 3B in the frame.
Maikis
De La Cruz and Mazzilli singled after an E1 in the 2nd, but Maikis
would be thrown out at 2B on Mazzilli's hit.
Phillip
Evans and Matt Oberste led off the 3rd inning with singles, and
Jayce Boyd was able to get Evans home on an RBI groundout.
Maikis
and Mazzilli both singled again in the 4th inning, but the B-Mets
left the bases loaded this time.
Oberste
(BB) and Dominic Smith (HBP) reached to start the 7th and both
eventually came around to score. Oberste came home on a sac fly from Jayce
Boyd, and then Colton Plaia doubled Smith home.
Smith added a single later in the game.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Kevin McGowan benefitted from a 9-2 double play to end the 6th inning, as Stefan Sabol was given the chance to show off his arm and gun down Barrett Barnes at home. Also, check out some double plays turned by the infield.
