Recapish
The
Binghamton Mets walked off in extras for the second straight night Friday, this
time taking the 3-2 win against the Yard Goats in the 13th. Rainy
Lara gave his team a great chance to win over 6 innings, but the B-Mets were
back to having trouble getting the big hit with runners in scoring position.
Fortunately the pen was even better than Lara, which gave the offense (aka,
Stefan Sabol) plenty of time to come back, and they finally did in the 9th.
The B-Mets pen stayed great in extras, and Sabol did the rest, knocking in
Victor Cruzado, who scored the game-winning run for a second straight night.
The
Yard Goats really made Lara work in the 1st and 3rd
innings, but Lara was able to limit the damage to just 1 run in each frame,
which was obviously huge in this game. The 1st was actually extended
after Lara struck out Ryan McMahon with two outs because the wild pitch got
away from the B-Mets catcher. Correll Prime followed with an RBI infield hit to
make it a 1-0 game.
Sabol
had a huge game, finishing with 4 hits, including all 3 RBI hits for the
B-Mets. He tied the game with a two out RBI double to knock in Cruzado in the 2nd
inning. He might’ve had a 4 double night with some generous scoring: his 9th
inning RBI hit was ruled a single and E8 because the ball bounced away from
David Dahl, but the announcers initially called it a double because Sabol never
stopped around 1B; his walkoff single was lined into the LF corner and would’ve
been a double under normal circumstances, but his teammates were crowding him
just shy of 2B when the cameras panned to him after the winning hit.
It wasn’t all positive for Sabol though,
as he was charged with an error on the play that led to the second run of the
game in the 3rd inning. Dillon Thomas lined a single towards Sabol
with Pat Valaika on 1B in the 3rd. The ball bounced away from Sabol,
which allowed the runners to move up a base. Then L.J. Mazzilli failed to catch
the throw in from Sabol for an E4, which caused the runners to take off again.
Thomas was thrown out at 3B, but Valaika scored the second Hartford run of the
game.
Kevin
McGowan made his season debut for the B-Mets and had no problems. Logan Taylor
did most of the heavy lifting out of the pen, striking out 6 over 3 scoreless
innings and facing one over the minimum during that time. Those two relievers were
starting in St. Lucie last year, so they are a little more advanced than the
rest of the pen.
I
break down the scoring details below, so enjoy! This series continues Satuday
night at 7:05 PM, with former major leaguer Josh Zeid scheduled to make his Mets
franchise debut for Binghamton.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Stefan
Sabol started his big night with a two out RBI double in the 2nd
inning. He knocked in Victor Cruzado, who had drawn a leadoff walk.
Sabol’s
second double of the game came leading off the 5th inning, but the
B-Mets couldn’t advance him.
Dominic
Smith led off the 6th with his first hit of the game.
Colton
Plaia and Matt Oberste singled in the 7th inning, and the B-Mets got
the tying run into scoring position with less than two outs, but vets Derrik
Gibson and Niuman Romero couldn’t come through.
Colton
Plaia doubled to spark the game-tying rally in the 9th inning.
Maikis De La Cruz came in to run for Plaia and was quickly knocked in on
Sabol’s third hit of the game.
Jayce
Boyd and Dominic Smith singled leading off the 10th inning, but
neither would touch 3B safely – Boyd was caught stealing 3B to end the frame.
Victor
Cruzado reached on an infield single to start the final rally of the night in
the 13th. He’d advance to 2B on a sac bunt from L.J. Mazzilli, and
then score on Sabol’s final hit of the night.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
The
B-Mets turned 4 double plays in this game, including this 463 twin killing to
end the 13th inning. Check out the nice diving stop from Dominic Smith at 1B.
