Recapish
For
a second straight day in Salt Lake, the 51s used a big 6-run inning to take
control of their game against the Bees en route to an easy win. Sean Gilmartin
had great control of his secondary stuff on the mound, which led to 8
strikeouts, matching his season high.
When
a crafty, soft-tosser like Sean Gilmartin has a big strike zone like the ump
was calling in this one, hitters better be ready to swing. The Bees never made
that adjustment Sunday, taking borderline pitches for strikes all night,
including five for strike 3. The 51s did make the adjustment and went into the
3rd inning ready to swing, finishing with a pair of doubles and
Gavin Cecchini’s fourth homer of the season in the frame.
Gilmartin
didn’t need a big one in this one, but he was quick to get his teammates back
to the field over the next few frames. He ran into trouble during a long 6th
inning, when he allowed a double and the Bees only run of the game. A two out
walk in the inning loaded the bases, but Gilmartin ended the threat with his 8th
strikeout of the night.
Despite
the big lead, Paul Sewald was brought in to work the 9th with
rehabbing Travis d’Arnaud behind the plate. Sewald had his best outing in
awhile, striking out the side, which led to some chest pumps for the Las Vegas
closer.
I
break down the scoring, defense, and strikeout details with highlights below,
so enjoy! This series wraps up Monday night at 9:05 PM with Rafael Montero (2-4,
5.82 ERA) scheduled to pitch for Las Vegas.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
The
51s broke this game open with a 6-run 3rd inning, the second
straight game they had a 6-run frame. Daniel Muno led things off with his third
double of the season, which was also the 51s first hit of the night. Muno went
to 3B on a Dilson single and then scored on an E6 – it was initially ruled a
hit for Brandon Nimmo. Travis d’Arnaud then doubled Dilson and Nimmo home to
give Las Vegas a 3-0 lead. Gavin Cecchini would double that lead 4 batters
later when he launched his 4th homer of the season.
Travis
d’Arnaud picked up his second hit of the game in the 4th inning and
Roger Bernadina eventually knocked Johnny Monell in after a fielder’s choice.
Nimmo
did pick up a hit in the 5th inning.
Eric
Campbell doubled into the LF corner in the 9th and Cecchini’s second
hit of the game brought him home to cap the scoring.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Gavin
Cecchini started a double play behind Gilmartin in the 7th inning.
Roger
Bernadina made a nice catch at the wall with a runner on 1B in the 8th
inning.
