Batters

Michael Conforto – 1-4, SO
Xorge Carrillo – 1-3, 2B (8), 2 SO

Recap

Michael Fulmer was just nasty for Binghamton Monday night, but the B-Mets managed just 2 hits against Akron starter Mike Clevinger, and ended up shutout for the second time during this 3-game set in Akron. Conforto hit a two out single in the 1st, Carrillo hit a leadoff double in the 6th, and Binghamton got nothing else from their offense during this game. Beck Wheeler took over for Fulmer when he reached his pitch count after 7 innings, and Wheeler worked a perfect 8th to preserve the 1-0 game for the top of the order in the 9th.

2015 Monday Morning Mets Minors Players of the Week

Image from this 2013 interview

June 22-28, 2015

Keeping track of the hottest minor leaguers in the Mets farm system, I will be rotating through the lower level teams covered here.

Hitter of the Week: Travis Taijeron. Kirk and Recker are two obvious choices, but they’re basically major leaguers, so it was down to Diehl and Taijeron, but Taijeron offered a more complete package.
Starting Pitcher of the Week: There were too many good choices this past week, but I thought Michael Fulmer looked great in his start.
Relief Pitcher of the Week: Giving the nod to Christian Montgomery, who struck out 6 of 11 batters faced last week.
Team of the Week: The Las Vegas 51s had some huge performances offensively, and they only lost once

The Highlights:

Pitchers

Luis Cessa – 7 IP, 6 H, BB, 6 SO, 82 Pitches (58 Strikes), 7 GO: 2 FO
Matt Koch (H, 3, 3.22 ERA) – 1 IP, SO, 1 GO

Batters

Gavin Cecchini – 1-4, 2B (16), 3 RBI (29), 2 SO
Michael Conforto – 1-4, SO
Brock Peterson – 1-3, BB
Aderlin Rodriguez – 2-4, R, SO

Recap

Luis Cessa was on top of his game Sunday afternoon in Akron, and Gavin Cecchini provided the jolt the B-Mets needed in the 5th, as Binghamton ended a 4-game losing streak. Cessa was extremely sharp throughout the start, only topping 15 pitches in an inning once, and needing only 4 pitches during a perfect 5th, shutting the Rubber Ducks down after being given a lead. Cessa likely could’ve kept the shutout going through the 8th, if not the 9th, but after Ynoa went the distance during Saturday’s loss, manager Pedro Lopez likely wanted to get the bullpen some work. Matt Koch worked a perfect 8th, and Paul Sewald allowed a 2 out solo blast in the 9th to end the shutout bid.

The Mets have a pair of undrafted free agents playing in the GCL: Alejandro Castro of Faulkner, and William Barring of Westmont.

Mets Undrafted Free Agent Will Barring is Playing for the GCL Mets, Who is He?

Image from the original announcement

Signed after the draft, the Mets assigned Westmont’s Will Barring to the GCL Mets this past week, where his pro career is off and running.

Just as nearly unreported as the signing of Alejandro Castro was that of William Barring, an outfielder who went 0-5 in 3 games this week during his pro debut with the GCL Mets. Barring is a 22-year old from Irvine, California who used to also play football. Barring spent 4 years playing center field at Westmont college, batting .335, with 12 homeruns and 113 RBI’s, and he was a two-time All-Golden State Athletic Conference selection.

Another Undrafted College Pitcher Makes a Successful Pro Debut in the Mets System

Image from the original announcement

Signed after the draft, Faulkner’s closer Alejandro Castro threw a scoreless inning for the GCL Mets in his pro debut.

As is often the case with undrafted free agents, the Mets signing of 22-year old Alejandro Castro went mostlyunreported, but is it possible they found another diamond in the rough? Per the Faulkner school site, Alejandro Castro was the school’s closer this past year, and he went 3-2, with 11 saves and a 1.60 ERA. His bio page is a little light, but his stat page shows that he finished with 27 K: 9 BB and a .221 average allowed over 39.1 IP (28 G). It looks like he helped his team to a #2 ranking in the NAIA World Series, but Faulkner would be eliminated one round shy of the finals.

W: Plutko (3-1, 2.25 ERA); L: Ynoa (4-5, 4.60 ERA); Save: Johnson (11, 1.57 ERA)

The Highlights:

Pitchers

Gabriel Ynoa – 8 IP, 8 H, 3 R (1 ER), 5 SO, 87 Pitches (62 Strikes), 15 GO: 2 FO

Batters

Brock Peterson – 2-3, 2B (8), BB
Aderlin Rodriguez – 1-3, SO

Recap

Gabriel Ynoa turned in one of his best performances of the year, but the B-Mets bats could only make loud outs in Akron, and they ended up on the wrong end of an exciting pitcher’s duel. Ynoa was very sharp, showing that trademark control while recording 5 strikeouts for just the second time this season – the 9 swinging strikes are the second most he’s had in a start this year too. Brock Peterson had a nice night, and the B-Mets 2 threats came during the innings the Brock had a hit. In the 2nd, he led off with a single and would advance when Aderlin hit a single, but they would be stranded on base. In the 4th, he hit a one-out double into the left center field gap (see below), but would again be stranded at 2B.

            Check out yesterday’s results here.

Tucker Blair gave a couple of Mets prospect eyewitness accounts for BP from his trip to see the B-Mets in Bowie: Cecchini and Aderlin. Neither report is good (not surprising for Aderlin), but remember that these reports are based on one look, in this case a 2-10 from Cecchini and a 1-9 from Aderlin over 2 games.

The Irish News had a profile on P.J. Conlon, who made his pro debut for Brooklyn last night.

Michael Conforto – 1-4, 2B (9), 2 SO
Brock Peterson – 1-4, R, HR (4), RBI (23), 3 SO
Dustin Lawley – 1-4
Jared King – 1-4, SO

Recap

After the B-Mets rallied from an early hole dug by Seth Lugo, Akeel Morris imploded in the 8th, leading to a third straight loss for Binghamton. The B-Mets couldn’t produce much offense against Harrisburg starter Austin Voth, with a pair of homeruns providing all three runs. Michael Conforto nearly added one of his own in the 6th, but the hit would bounce off the wall for a double and the outfielder deked J Rod into holding enough that he didn’t score. After Dario Alvarez finished the 6th and handled the 7th cleanly, Akeel Morris really struggled in the 8th, and then Adam Kolarek could only partially bail him out of a bases loaded situation.
