Betsy
Helfand of the LVRJ reports that Lugo’s move to the DL was mostly precautionary,
but due
to a sore forearm. The 51s did need to open a roster spot when they moved
him, so it could be nothing, but his velocity appeared to be down during his
first few starts, so I’m a little concerned here.

First pitch strike to 10/20 batters faced (50%)
Pre-game notes: Dilson
Herrera has reached base safely in 10 of 11 games since returning to field
action. Gavin Cecchini is off to a quiet start at the plate, but his 10 K: 11
BB ratio is great, and he picked up his first SAL bomb Tuesday. T.J. Rivera is
8-13 with 3 doubles and a homerun over the past 3 games and played LF for the
first time in his career Tuesday. Often times a PCL hot streak can carry over
to good bench play for a few months, but like most bench players, T.J.’s
success at the next level will be BABIP-dependent. Sean Gilmartin is coming off
his worst start of the year, allowing a
season high 2 R over 6 IP against Sacramento last week. He’s fourth on the PCL
ERA leaderboard, trailing Gabriel Ynoa (1.48 ERA) just like everyone else.

First pitch strike to 9/23 batters faced (39%)
Post-game recap: St.
Lucie had two players in the lineup that haven’t even played in the SAL yet, but
that doesn’t excuse such a big loss. Wuilmer Becerra was the lone bright spot,
reaching base all 4 times to the plate, including a double and two walks.
Pre-game notes: Luis Guillorme has a pair of hit in each of the last two games and at least one walk in 4 straight games. His average is creeping up, but still a little lower than he’d like, though his .357 OBP is still very nice – now if he could just start hitting some doubles. Amed Rosario is 5-9 with 7 RBI’s and a walk the past two days. His 10 XBH are tied for second most in the FSL. John Mora is 5-12 over the past 3 games after just 5 hits over his previous 31 at bats spanning 8 games. Chris Flexen avoided the big inning yesterday to pick up his first win. In 26.1 IP across 4 starts, opponents have scored in one inning per start.

No gameday so no pitch stats
Post game notes: The Fireflies led for most of the game but blew their lead in the eighth and had no comeback magic in them on this night. Thomas McIlraith had his best outing since the no-hitter, with 17 of 24 batters either striking out or hitting a groundball against him Thursday night. Vinny Siena tripled in his first AB to extend his on base streak to 21 straight games. David Thompson would bring him home on a groundout, and then later added a solo blast, which brings his RBI total to 25. Joe Tuschak tripled home two runners in the third - Siena had led off the frame with a double, but was then caught trying to steal 3B. Ivan Wilson was ejected after striking out in the sixth.

Pre-game notes: Vinny
Siena and David Thompson keep tearing up the SAL. Siena has reached base in all
20 games this year, and in more than half of his PA’s. David Thompson leads the
minors with 23 RBI’s, and only Bryce Harper and Robinson Cano have more among
affiliated ball players (both have 24). Thompson has also been a strong
defender at 3B when I’ve had the chance to see him on MiLB.tv. Dash Winningham is
13-30 during his 8-game hitting streak, with 3 doubles and 2 K: 5 BB. He has a
hit in 15 of 18 games played this year. Ivan Wilson is 8-19 with 3 doubles and
2 bombs over his last 5 games, but best of all, he has only 3 K’s during that
span. Tucker Tharp extended his hit streak to 10 straight with an RBI single
yesterday. After 0 K’s in his first start, yesterday’s starter P.J. Conlon had
5 K’s in start two, 6 K’s in start 3, and 7 K’s last night. He’s up 10 18 K: 1
BB and 1 HBP in 23.2 IP.
Minors MVP of the Day
– Brandon Nimmo had a hit in each of the first 3 inning, capped off by a bases clearing double.
Minors Cy of the Day
– Thomas McIlraith allowed hard contact on a pair of homeruns, but was otherwise very much in control against Lexington Thursday night.
