Recapish
The
Binghamton Mets lost their opener in Akron Monday night, but all Mets fans will
care about when they read the box score is that top prospect Dominic Smith went
yard for the first time in 2016 (see below). Smith’s homerun came off Akron
starter Adam Plutko in the 7th inning, and it both tied the game at
1 while knocking the Indians #14-prospect out of the game. Unfortunately for
the B-Mets, Rainy Lara and Luis Mateo would combine to give that lead back in
the bottom half of the 7th inning, and Binhamton could get nothing
going against the Rubber Ducks pen.
Rainy
Lara was very sharp over his first 6 innings, only allowing a run on a pair of
two out doubles in the bottom of the 1st inning. Clint Frazier would
add a double off of him in the 3rd inning, but he was otherwise
matching Plutko inning for inning. Plutko doesn’t have top of the rotation
stuff, but he has great control and a nice changeup – his curve flashed
potential too. Akron closer Ben Heller came in throwing upper 90’s heat (per
the announcers) with a hard curve, and he overmatched Derrik Gibson and Niuman
Romero back-to-back to end the game with Dom Smith on deck – I would’ve paid
extra to see that matchup.
I
take a closer look at this game, including Plutko’s start, below, so enjoy!
This series continues Tuesday night in Akron, with Mickey Jannis scheduled to
go for Binghamton, and a 6:35 PM expected start time.
Scoring Highlights
Matt
Oberste picked up the B-Mets first hit in the 2nd inning, lining his
4th double of the year into LF.
Indians
#2-prospect Clint Frazier picked up a double for Akron in the 3rd.
The
big hit of the night for Binghamton came from Dominic Smith after a double
groundout in the 7th. Smith had flown out to RF and then deep RF in
his first two AB, so I was wondering if he could get the better of Plutko in
his 3rd chance.

Defensive Highlights
Back
at 3B, Derrik Gibson made a nice play behind the bag in the 2nd
inning, though they didn’t show the throw to 1B.
The
third time was the charm for Rainy Lara in the 3rd, as he picked
Todd Hankins off of 1B on his third straight throw over – it was also one pitch
before the Clint Frazier double.
L.J.
Mazzilli made a nice little leaping catching behind second base in the 5th.
Victor
Cruzado ran a long way for a pair of catches in the LF corner, but he was so
deep in the corner that the camera couldn’t see him.
Akron turned a nifty double play right before the Dom Smith bomb.

The
Indian’s number 14-prospect (per BA), Plutko was great for Akron in this game. I
showed the hard contact he allowed above, and otherwise he was in control
against the B-Mets. He struck out Niuman Romero to end a perfect 1st
inning.
Plutko
go L.J. Mazzilli swinging to end a clean 3rd inning.
A
leadoff walk to Derrik Gibson was erased by a double play in the 4th
inning. Plutko also faced the minimum in the 5th and 6th
innings, picking up strikeouts of Xorge Carrillo and Kyle Johnson along the
way. In all, he faced the minimum in 5 innings Monday night, preventing the
B-Mets from ever getting anything going.
