Recapish
Mets
lefty reliever Josh Edgin took the next step in his journey back to the majors
by beginning his rehab assignment with St. Lucie Sunday afternoon. Edgin was
wild and failed to finish the 1st inning, but Ricky Knapp took over
and picked up where he left off in 2015 with Savannah. The St. Lucie offense
was threatening all night, with 8 of the 9 batters combining for 12 hits, but
they could only push across the 4 runs. That seemed like more than enough as
Robert Coles went back out to the mound in the 9th, but he’d allow a
2R homerun before recording an out, which made it a one run game. But Coles
would induce fly outs to CF from the next 3 batters to hold on for the win,
which bumped St. Lucie to 3-1 on the season.
Edgin last pitched in a game on
September 23, 2014, so it must’ve felt great just to get back out there. He was
great for the Mets during that 2014 season, pitching to just a 1.32 ERA thanks
to some long scoreless streaks – he went 13 appearance and later 17 appearance
without a run allowed. The stadium gun was down in the 1st, but the
announcers thought he was throwing hard, “you can see the power is there… it’s
all about the location,” (That was from Elliot, I think it's Elliot Brownstein). The gun did report 2 fastballs in the mid-80’s while he
faced Tyler Ard, which would represent a significant decrease in velocity for
Edgin, but I haven’t seen any reports of his velocity elsewhere to confirm
that. They called 16 of his pitches, and gave location information on a few
more of his pitches, so I put together a partial pitch log below.
Notes: John Mora picked up an RBI for the 4th
straight game and is off to a great start for St. Lucie; Amed Rosario continues
to hit early; Lednier Ricardo (28) and Kevin Taylor (24) made their 2016 debut
and combined for 5 of the 12 hits; Wuilmer Becerra was removed during
Saturday’s game and will probably be out of the lineup a few more days with
what Adam MacDonald described as ‘a nagging injury’ – if I find out anything
else I’ll be sure to share it. St. Lucie returns home Monday to face Dunedin,
with either Scarlyn Reyes or Casey Delgado scheduled to pitch in the rotation next.
