Recapish
The
B-Mets offense put a lot of crooked numbers up on the scoreboard over the first
23 frames of this series, which helped them easily win games 1 and 2, and then
take a 5-3 after 4.5 innings Saturday. But then the Erie pen took over in the 6th
inning, and the B-Mets suddenly couldn’t make contact. After striking out just
once over the first 5 innings against the Erie starter, the Binghamton batters
would strikeout 10 times over the final 4 innings, with Kurt Spomer doing most
of that work. While the B-Mets offense floundered, the Erie offense took
advantage of a wild 5th from Tyler Pill and a wild 8th
from Akeel Morris to open up a 9-5 lead, and that would be more than enough.
Dominic
Smith had a very nice day at the plate, making some nice adjustments from
Friday’s forgettable night – he’s had a couple of bad nights, but he’s bounced
back with very strong nights the next day. He had been swinging over a lot of
breaking balls against Erie between Friday night and his first PA Saturday, so
it was nice when he lined out on a breaking ball in his first AB (to 1B with
one hand off the bat) and then launched a breaking ball to the RF wall for his
triple later on in the game.
Derrik
Gibson got the chance at SS after some very nice plays at 3B the past few days,
and it was a noticeable improvement over Niuman Romero. Maikis De La Cruz
continued his hot start with a double in his first AB. He had a .822 OPS last
April with St. Lucie, but was then never above .628 for a month after April.
Colton Plaia picked up a pair of hits for the second straight start.
Tyler Pill just hasn’t had the
command he needs to have success – he didn’t really have it with Las Vegas last
year either. Logan Taylor is scheduled to start Sunday, but he’s not exactly
stretched out, so the B-Mets pen was likely limited in this game. That’s why
Luis Mateo’s effort was so big, as he left manager Pedro Lopez a lot of bullets
for tomorrow’s game. Lopez raved about Akeel Morris’ improved fastball command
before the season started, but he wasn’t that sharp in this outing. In his
defense, he hadn’t pitched since Tuesday, but they needed more from him in this
game to have a chance at coming back.
This series wraps up Sunday
afternoon at 1:35 PM, with Logan Taylor scheduled to go as deep into the game
as he can.
Scoring Highlights
Dominic
Smith came to the plate with a pair of runners on in the 1st inning
thanks to a HBP (Derrik Gibson) and a walk (Niuman Romero). Smith would double
Gibson home to put the B-Mets up 1-0, and Matt Oberste followed with an RBI
groundout to double that lead.
Maikis
De La Cruz kept his hot start to the 2016 season going with a double lined to
RF leading off the 2nd. Colton Plaia would follow with a single to
LF, but Maikis had to hold up at 3B on the play. Fortunately for the B-Mets,
Erie starter Brennan Smith unleashed a wild pitch that allowed Maikis to come
home, because the team did little else at the plate during the rest of the
frame.
Smith
came up with the same baserunner’s occupying the same bases they did in the 1st,
but this time he drove them both home with a triple to the RF wall. The ball
appears to be caught, but the umpire apparently claimed that the wall help him
trap it (?).
Victor
Cruzado and Plaia would add singles in the 9th, but the other 3
B-Mets to bat in the frame struck out.
Defensive Highlights
Mazzilli
started a double play on this grounder fielded behind the mound in the 1st
inning.
Pitcher Coverage
Luis Mateo
Mateo
would allow a run after Kody Eaves hit a leadoff triple in the 6th
inning, but otherwise gave the B-Mets a nice effort from the pen. He struck out
Tyler Bortnick to finish his night.
David Roseboom
Roseboom
came in to finish the 8th after Akeel Morris struggled with control,
and he struck out Jason Krizan to end an Erie threat.
