Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies fell behind early in the Greenville finale, and they
couldn’t come back to complete the sweep against the Drive. The Drive managed 7
singles against Fireflies Joe Shaw during his 4 innings of work, and they took
advantage of 2 HBP’s in the 2nd inning to jump ahead 3-0. The
Fireflies managed only 1 extra bate hit themselves – Milton Ramos’ first double
of the year in the 3rd – and failed to come up with the big hit they
kept getting over the first 3 games of the series.
Shaw
didn’t have the same game success as in his first two starts, but he wasn’t
exactly getting smacked around the ballpark either – BABIP gonna BABIP. He kept
missing bats at a good rate, and turned in a very nice 5 K: 1 BB. It was the
first walk he issued all year, but the HBP’s are what came back to burn him.
His breaking stuff has been too much for the SAL to handle so far, which has
helped him post a 31.8 K%: 1.5 BB% through his first 3 starts (16 IP).
Red-hot
Dash Winningham got the day off so Jeff Diehl could start at 1B and Vinny Siena
could DH. Siena extended his on base streak to ‘still every game in 2016’ and
Diehl picked up a hit of his own, but the lineup just isn’t the same without
the power hitting lefty. Milton Ramos had another very nice game and would’ve
had his first homerun in most SAL ballparks, but instead settled for a double
hit halfway up the CF wall (see below!).
I take a closer look at the details from this game with highlights below, so enjoy! The
Columbia Fireflies have a day off Monday as they travel home to start a series
with the Lexington Legends this week. Chase Ingram will get the ball as the
rotation starts its fourth turn of the 2016 season, and the next game is
scheduled for Tuesday at 7:05 PM.
Scoring Highlights
David
Thompson and Jeff Diehl picked up back-to-back singles leading off the 2nd
inning, but they’d both be stranded in scoring position
Milton
Ramos led off the 3rd inning with a double to CF, and Tucker Tharp
singled him home one batter later.
Vinny
Siena picked up his first hit with one out in the 6th inning, and
his second hit with one out in the 9th inning.
Defensive Highlights
Milton
Ramos made a couple of very nice plays in the field yesterday.

Shaw
allowed a run on three singles in the 1st inning, but he struck out
both Basabe brothers during the frame: Luis Alejandro Basabe for the first out,
and Luis Alexander Basabe swinging for the final out.
The
Drive sent 8 men to the plate against Shaw in the 2nd inning, and he
hit two of them with a pitch. He also picked up strikeouts of Roldani Baldwin
and Kyri Washington during the frame.
He
struck out the Alexander Basabe leading off the 3rd inning, which
was his only clean inning of the start.
