Recap
Gabriel
Ynoa made a successful PCL debut against the RiverCats Monday night, and the
Las Vegas 51s were able to battle back from a 1st inning deficit for
a 5-2 win. Ynoa faced trouble throughout the night, but he managed to limit the
damage outside of the 1st inning. Sacramento starter Ricky Romero
limited Las Vegas to just 1 hit over the first 4 innings, but his early season
pitch count limited him to just those 4 innings. The 51s would then jump on the
Cats bullpen, scoring 3 runs off of Albert Suarez over the next 2 frames to pull
ahead for good. Meanwhile, the 51s pen was nearly perfect, allowing just a
single over 4 innings of relief.
Ynoa
definitely had the first start adrenaline flowing early, as he hit 95 MPH often
in the 1st inning, and was throwing almost entirely heat – per table
2, 16 of 20 1st inning pitches were fastballs, and he averaged 94.1
MPH on his fastball in the 1st. He began mixing in the slider more
starting in the 2nd inning, and then whipped out a few curveballs at
the end of his start – he also mixed in some changeups against lefties. He
induced a lot of groundballs in this start, but when Sacramento got the ball in
the air, they did a lot of damage against him. He allowed two triples, and
Brandon Nimmo had to flag down two fly balls near the warning track in deep CF
(it’s 433 to CF at Cashman Field). This start could’ve ended a lot worse for
Ynoa, but he worked around trouble in the 2nd through 4th
innings, which allowed Las Vegas to battle back. He stranded runners on 2B and
3B in the 2nd, runners at 1B and 2B in the 3rd, and a
runner at 3B in the 4th. He finally worked a clean inning in the 5th,
but then reached his pitch limit.
The
offense responded to Ynoa’s first 1-2-3 inning by immediately putting together
their best threat of the game. Marc Krauss led off with a walk and went to 3B
on Nimmo’s first double of the year. Unfortunately, the 51s would have to
settle for one run on a sac fly, but it cut the lead in half. In the 6th,
Matt Reynolds led things off with a single, but T.J. Rivera followed with a
double play groundout. Fortunately, Travis Taijeron, Rene Rivera, Krauss, and
Nimmo followed with consecutive singles for two runs. Dilson Herrera – sitting
because of his sore shoulder and no DH – would get a chance to pinch hit, and
put a good drive into the ball, but flew out to LF. After flying out to the
wall earlier in the game, Ty Kelly doubled to the RF wall in the 7th,
and then hit a two run double to LF in the 8th. Nimmo had picked up
his third single of the game in the 8th after Rene Rivera reached on
a HBP, and Danny Muno followed them with a PH walk.
While
the 51s surged ahead, the pen took control. Chase Bradford worked around a two
out single in the 6th. Zach Thornton retired all 5 batters he faced
on 2 strikeouts and 3 groundouts. Josh Smoker came in to retire the lefty for
the last out of the 8th. Then closer Paul Sewald came in, much to
the delight of the crowd, and retired all 3 batters he faced, including retiring
the final batter, Hak-Ju Lee, down on 3 straight strikes.
Also of note from this game was Marc Krauss' glove work at 1B. Gavin Cecchini spiked three throws to 1B, and Krauss dug all 3 out of the dirt with no problems. Looking to add an insurance run late in the game, Wally asked Cecchini to bunt, which he failed to do. This
series continues Tuesday night at 10:05 PM ET, with Sean Gilmartin currently
scheduled to pitch for Las Vegas.
