Recap
The
Binghamton Mets were kicking themselves by the end of this game, as they wasted
countless opportunities to jump ahead against top Nationals prospect Lucas
Giolito and the Harrisburg Senators, and ended up losing in extras. Kyle
Regnault made his AA debut for the B-Mets, and he was really strong over his 5
innings, but found himself trailing 2-0 as he neared his pitch limit. The
B-Mets would bail him out with a big 5th, which put him in line for
the win, but Logan Taylor’s stuff got away from him in the 6th, and
Harrisburg plated the tying run. The game would stay knotted at 3 until the 11th,
when an RBI double from the Senators Stephen Perez put Harrisburg up for good.
Kyle
Regnault throws a fastball, changeup, and curveball, with the changeup looking
like his primary secondary pitch at this point. He’s older, but he got a very
late start in affiliated ball after 2009 Tommy John Surgery severely ruined his
initial chances at pro ball. He’d play in Indy ball – Jose Canseco was a
teammate at one point – which caught BA’s
eye in 2013, but it wasn’t until a chance meeting with ‘The Vulture’ Phil
Regan, who was St. Lucie’s pitching coach at the time. Regnault was working at
a golf clubhouse Regan played at and the two got to talking one day, which led
to a tryout for Regnault in October 2014, and then a bullpen job with St. Lucie
in 2015. It’s hard to add much more about with no velocity reports or CF camera
looks this time, but he’s definitely earned himself a few more starts in the
B-Mets rotation.
There
were no velocity reports because the NYSEG gun was down, but I’m sure plenty of
scouts were there watching since Giolito was on the mound. He cruised his first
time through the lineup, but then got very wild in the 4th, loading
the bases with 3 walks before escaping the jam. Binghamton would leave the
following runners in scoring position: Gibson on 2B in the 2nd,
bases loaded in the 4th, Niuman Romero at 2B and Victor Cruzado at
3B in the 5th, Maikis De La Cruz at 2B and Xorge Carrillo at 3B in
the 6th, Romero at 2B in the 7th, Cruzado at 3B (Romero
at 1B) in the 9th, and Carrillo at 2B in the 10th. That’s
10 baserunners stranded within a hit to the outfield of home – well, most hits
to the outfield. Any one of those guys comes home and the B-Mets win this game,
but sometimes you have bad nights. Unfortunately for Mets fans, Dominic Smith
failed to come up with a hit in 4 of those situations, flying out in the 4th,
grounding into a double play in the 5th, and then striking out in
the 7th and to end the 9th.
The
B-Mets series with Harrisburg continues Wednesday night at 6:35 PM, with Mickey
Jannis scheduled to make his 2016 debut and push the B-Mets back to .500.
Scoring Highlights
The
B-Mets had a bases loaded chance in the 4th thanks to 3 walks, but
they couldn’t score in the frame.
After
Maikis De La Cruz walked leading off the 5th, Manager Pedro Lopez
called on L.J. Mazzilli as a pinch hitter, and he came through with an infield
single. Jeff McNeil was up next, and he drew a walk to load the bases for
Victor Cruzado. Cruzado picked up the big hit, driving home two runs with a
single lined into LF. The bases would reload for Dominic Smith when Niuman
Romero was walked, but Smith would hit a grounder to shortstop that started a
double play. The B-Mets still tied the game on the grounder, but that’s exactly
who they’d want up in that spot.
Maikis
De La Cruz picked up his first XBH in the EL with a double in the 6th.
The B-Mets would strand runners on 2B and 3B in the frame.
Cruzado
picked up a two out single, stole 2B and went to 3B on a throwing error in the
9th, which set up another big PA for Smith. Unfortunately Smith
would go down swinging on three strikes, which pushed this game to extras.
Birthday
boy Xorge Carrillo hit a two out double in the 10th, but again
Binghamton couldn’t come through with a big hit to drive him in.
Defensive Highlights
Stefan
Sabol stole an extra base hit in the 6th, but a run still came home
as a sac fly.
Jeff
McNeil did a nice job ranging to the opposite side of 2B for a grounder in the
11th.
Rafael
Bautista made a diving catch in 10th that prevented a potential
Binghamton rally.
