Recapish

The Binghamton Mets finally put an end to their losing streak Sunday afternoon, pulling off a 6-2 win in their series finale with Erie after 6 straight losses. B-Mets starter Mickey Jannis struggled mightily with control again, but he was wildly effective this time, as Erie couldn’t square him up well when he was near the zone. He couldn’t give the B-Mets the length you’d like to see from a starter, but he found a way to keep it together for 4+ innings, and let his pen and offense do the rest. Minor league veterans Derrik Gibson and Niuman Romero, who had 3 hits apiece, led the B-Mets offense, which had really struggled during the losing streak.
Half of the starts Jannis has made in AA have been cut short due to his wildness, but I think he earned a longer leash from Pedro Lopez moving forward with the way he was able to gut it out for 4.1 IP. The B-Mets rarely show their CF camera on MiLB.tv, so I can’t tell you whether he was getting pinched or not, but the Erie batters were happy to watch his pitches go by and let the ump decide. He took out his 90 MPH fastball more often in this game, using it in the right spots to keep guys off balance. Mike Hepple was also wild after taking over in the 5th, but fortunately for the fans in attendance, David Roseboom and Akeel Morris were in command and cruised through the final 3 innings – this game started at the same time as St. Lucie’s Sunday afternoon game, but ended an hour later. Jannis allowed a pair of runs on 3 singles and a walk in the 3rd, and that was it for Erie, as they’d manage just one more hit over the final 6 frames.
I look at the B-Mets scoring details with highlights below, so enjoy! The B-Mets welcome Portland into town as they continue their homestand. Robert Gsellman is expected to pitch for Binghamton Monday night, with a 6:35 scheduled start time.

Scoring Highlights

The B-Mets vets combined for a run on two hits in the 1st. Derrik Gibson led off the game with a single to CF, and then Niuman Romero doubled him home two batters later.

Victor Cruzado led off the 2nd inning with the first Double-A homerun of his career. L.J. Mazzilli was up next and he drew a walk, stole 2B, went to 3B on a groundout, and scored on Gibson’s second hit in as many innings.

Mazzilli picked up his first hit of the game on a grounder to the shortstop in the 3rd inning. it loaded the bases with two outs, but Phillip Evans struck out swinging to end any threat.

Maikis De La Cruz reached on an E4 to keep the 4th inning alive, and he’d come around to score two batters later when a Dominic Smith grounder found it’s way into RF.

The first three B-Mets batters reached to load the bases in the 5th, and Gibson would come through with another hit to bring home Cruzado. Cruzado led off the frame with a walk, and then Mazzilli and Evans followed with singles.

Defensive Highlights

Phil Evans made a couple of nice plays at 3B, including a sparkling spin play you rarely see from a third baseman in the 9th.

Erie right fielder Jeff McVaney made a nice sliding catch to rob Maikis De La Cruz in the second inning.
