Recap

Sean Gilmartin made his season debut for the Las Vegas 51s Tuesday night in a losing effort against the Sacramento River Cats. Gilmartin wouldn’t factor in the decision, but he was wild in his first ever PCL decision, and left 16 outs for a bullpen that’s already been taxed early this year. The Cats would build a 5-1 lead against the 51s bullpen, getting to Dario Alvarez for two runs in the 9th inning, which is the total he’s allowed in all 3 appearances this year. Those two runs would loom large as Las Vegas battled back with 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th, but the newest Las Vegas player – catcher Rene Rivera – would end the comeback attempt by striking out with T.J. Rivera on 2B.
Sacramento struck first when Ryan Lollis doubled home Gorkys Hernandez in the 3rd inning. The 51s were quick to strike back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Ty Kelly, who scored from 1B. That may sound like a normal play, but the ball was blooped into CF and nearly caught by a diving Hernandez, who still managed to trap the ball. Ty Kelly was running on the pitch, and never once hesitated, so he came all the way around from 1B on a bloop hit into CF. Maybe more impressively, Nimmo never stopped hustling either, and he made it to 2B safely on a ball hit not far beyond the bag.
Erik Goeddel made his 2016 debut in the 6th and Miguel Olivo greeted him back to the PCL with a solo blast crushed well beyond the LF wall. A leadoff walk in the 7th would burn Chase Bradford, as Ryan Lollis came around to score on a groundout. Dario Alvarez also walked the leadoff batter in the 9th, but he picked Hernandez off trying to steal 2B. Unfortunately for Dario, he also walked the second batter of the 9th inning, and then allowed a pair of singles that led to two key runs before retiring the side. One of those runs came home after an error by Nimmo, when the ball temporarily got by him in CF. Las Vegas put together a two out rally in the 9th inning that got the remaining fans very excited for the first time all night. Matt Reynolds sparked it with a single to CF, and then went to 3B on a single from Johnny Monell. Travis Taijeron then drove them both in with a triple lined into CF. T.J. Rivera kept the rally going with a double, but Rene Rivera’s forgettable night (he also had a passed ball) ended with a strikeout.
Mets fans that follow the minors closely got their lineup wish Tuesday night, as Brandon Nimmo and Gavin Cecchini hit back-to-back at the top of the lineup. Unfortunately the pair combined to go just 1-7 with a double, walk, and 3 strikeouts. Hopefully the prospect friendly lineups continue moving forward. This series continues Wednesday night at 10:05 PM, with Stolmy Pimentel scheduled to start for Las Vegas.
