Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s cruised for almost all of this game, but a big 9th
inning rally by the Grizzlies made this one exciting late. Gabriel Ynoa started
for the 51s, and while he didn’t have his customary command (he rarely walks 3
batters in a start), he got outstanding results. The 51s offense patiently
worked their way to 14 walks, but they left so many runners on base that this
game stayed PCL close – they left 8 runners on base in just the first 3
innings. Still, it took a weird set of events for the Grizzlies to even earn a
chance for the tie in the 9th. Las Vegas would use those walks to
their advantage in the 11th, when they scored their first run on 4
walks. Ty Kelly would add an RBI single in the frame for insurance, and then
Jeff Walters worked a perfect bottom half for the save.
Issuing
more than 2 walks is very rare for Ynoa, who has always been known for his
control, although more common for him in April. He allowed 3+ walks in 3
straight April starts with Binghamton last year, but then only reached that
mark one more time in 2015. He issued 3 walks twice in April 2014, but then
never again that season. Finally, he issued 3 walks in an appearance just once
from 2010-2013. Until the 7th, the only trouble Ynoa ran into was
the leadoff triple Tony Kemp hit on the second pitch of the game.
Thanks
to all the walking and stranding runners on base that Las Vegas did, this game
seemed to move along at a snail’s pace, and it lasted 3 hours and 59 minutes.
It should’ve been over an hour sooner, but things got weird in the 9th.
After finishing the 8th with a strikeout, Josh Smoker was sent back
out for the 9th to finish the game off. But he’d make the classic
mistake of walking the leadoff batter, which came back to haunt him and then
some. He did strike out the next batter, but then catcher Robert Pena reached
on a throwing error from Gavin Cecchini he was credited with a single for some
reason too). It was fitting that Pena reached that way though, as he had thrown
the ball away 3 times for Fresno, with each leading to a Las Vegas run. Andrew
Aplin followed with a comebacker that deflected off of Smoker for an RBI
single. Tony Kemp would be Smoker’s last chance, and the pesky Kemp singled
through the left side to knock him out.
Paul Sewald came on to stop the
bleeding, but he also made the classic mistake of walking the leadoff batter.
Matt Duffy followed with a two run single to tie the game at 5. Sewald
rebounded to get Jon Singleton on a fly out, and then he worked a perfect 10th
inning, but the damage had already been done.
I break this game down with
highlights below, so enjoy! This series continues Sunday afternoon in Fresno,
with Sean Gilmartin scheduled to make the 4:05 PM start.
Scoring Highlights
Dilson
Herrera sparked a 1st inning run for Las Vegas with a one out double
to LF. He’d take off for 3B with Matt Reynolds at the plate and score when the
Fresno catcher threw the ball into LF.
Brandon
Nimmo got a lucky single in the 2nd inning, with a pop up falling in
front of a guy who shouldn’t be playing LF.
The
first four Las Vegas batters of the 3rd alternated walks and
strikeouts, and then Rene Rivera added the 51s second run of the game with an
RBI single to RF on a pop up that should've been caught.
Dilson
and Reynolds hit consecutive singles leading off the 4th inning,
with Dilson advancing to 3B on Reynolds single to RF. Reynolds would take off
for 2B with Roger Bernadina at the plate, and the Fresno catcher threw the ball
into CF, which allowed Dilson to score and Reynolds to move up to 3B. T.J.
Rivera would bring him home with an RBI groundout to 3B.
They
added another run in the 7th without the benefit of a hit. Bernadina
walked to start the frame, stole 2B, stole 3B, and then came home when the
throw to 3B from the Fresno catcher went into LF (it was not a good night for
Roberto Pena).
Brandon
Nimmo added his second hit of the game when he led off the 8th with
a single into CF, but he’d be caught trying to steal 2B in the frame.
The
51s added a pair of runs in the 11th on only one hit. Bernadina led
off with a walk. After a sac bunt advanced Bernadina, Krauss was intentionally
walked to put the double play back on the table. Gavin Cecchini would also work
a walk to load the bases, so Fresno brought in a new pitcher. Cesar Valdez
would not fare much better though, walking in Rene Rivera for the first run,
and allowing an RBI single to Ty Kelly for the second.
Defensive Highlights
Gavin
Cecchini made his first throwing error of the season.
Brandon
Nimmo made a great diving catch on this sinking liner hit in front of him.

only clean innings were in the 2nd and 5th. He struck out
Jon Kemmer swinging to end the 2nd inning, and then Roberto Pena to
start the 3rd inning, but no one else outside of that stretch.
Josh Smoker
Smoker
struck Jon Singleton out to end the 8th, and then Jon Kemmer for the
second out of the 9th.
Paul Sewald
Sewald
struck out A.J. Reed with the bases loaded for the second out of the 9th
inning. He then added strikeouts of Colin Moran and Kemmer in the 10th.
Jeff Walters
Walters
worked a perfect 11th inning, striking out Tony Kemp and Eury Perez
to finish off the game.
