Recapish
The
Binghamton Mets wrapped up their series in Erie Sunday afternoon with their
third win in four games. Logan Taylor got the spot start despite pitching
Friday night, but he was limited to around 50 pitches. He’d make the most of
those pitches with an excellent outing, setting a positive tone that his pen
would follow. The B-Mets got to Erie starter Austin Kubitza early by taking
advantage of his wildness. However, outside of an explosive third inning, when
the B-Mets had 3 extra base hits, they didn’t really do much at the plate
themselves. Fortunately they would only need a minimal scoring output to win
Sunday, and they scratched together 4 runs.
The
first two batters would reach against Taylor Sunday afternoon, but then he
retired 10 of the next 11 Erie batters before leaving – the one batter who
reached hit the ball about 20 feet, and was then caught stealing. Erie’s
leadoff hitter Gustavo Nunez would be erased on the basepaths in the 1st
before #2 hitter Alberto Gonzalez singled, and then Logan Taylor went into
cruise control. Mike Hepple and Beck Wheeler would each add a pair of
strikeouts over 2 strong innings, and then Akeel Morris came in and worked a
perfect 9th to close out the series win.
Dominic
Smith did not have a good day at the plate Sunday, just like Friday
night, but he’s had 3 multi-hit games in his last 5 starts, so it’s more a
consistency problem than a ‘being overmatched’ problem. I really like Taylor’s
stuff – he throws a fastball 3 ways (fourseam, sinker, cutter) and a hard curve
– so I hope he continues to start in the B-Mets rotation, but as I said in the B-Mets
season preview, he’s probably a good pen arm long-term. Grandpa Niuman
Romero keeps hitting, and his defense at 3B was better, but looking forward to
Jeff McNeil’s return to the field.
I
break this game down in more detail and with GIF’s below. The B-Mets were off
to Akron after this game ended. Rainy Lara is Monday’s scheduled starter, with
the game expected to start at 6:35 PM.
Scoring Highlights
L.J.
Mazzilli led off the 1st with a walk and would eventually come
around to score. Derrik Gibson followed with a walk of his own, and an RBI
single from Niuman Romero gave Binghamton a 1-0 lead.
L.J.
Mazzilli led off the 3rd inning with a triple to right field. He’d
come home on Gibson’s third double of the year. Gibson stayed at second until
Matt Oberste came up with two outs and launched a double off the left center
field wall.
Colton
Plaia picked up his hit in the 4th.
Derrik
Gibson lined a two out single into center field in the 7th, and
Romero doubled him in to tack on one more run for Binghamton.
Defensive Highlights
Taylor
handled a comebacker nicely in the 2nd, but the camera didn’t stick
with the play.
Colton
Plaia showing off a nice pop time to catch Connor Harrell trying to steal 2B in
the 3rd inning.
Erie
second baseman Kody Eaves made a great play in the 7th to save a
B-Mets run and rob Colton Plaia of a second hit.

First pitch strike to 10/13 batters faced (77%)
After
the first two Erie batters reached against Taylor, he bounced back to strike
out Tyler Bortnick and then got Dean Green to ground out weakly to first base.
Taylor
worked a perfect 2nd, retiring two batters on weakly hit
groundballs. Connor Harrell reached on a comebacker leading off the 3rd
after the ball flung out of Taylor’s glove as he went for the transfer. Harrell
would be erased on a caught stealing in short order, and Taylor retired the
next two, including Gustavo Nunez on strikes.
He
finished his outing with a perfect 4th, getting two more groundouts
and picking up another strikeout of Bortnick.
Bonus
Includes both Sunday
and Friday night action
Mike Hepple
Hepple
struck out the first batter he faced – Dominic Ficociello – after taking over
in the 5th.
He
finished his two-inning outing with a third strikeout of Bortnick.
Beck Wheeler
Wheeler
worked a perfect 7th, but then had to work around a pair of singles
in the 8th. He’d bounce back to strikeout lefties Kody Eaves and
Nunes – he’s always been better against lefties.
Akeel Morris
Morris
was called to finish the game in the 9th and make quick work of
Erie. The first two batters hit groundouts to middle infielders, and then
Morris finished the game with another strikeout of Ficociello.
