Recapish

After falling behind early due to Astros top prospect A.J. Reed, the Las Vegas 51s would spend all afternoon Monday trying to battle back, but the Grizzlies would add just enough to stay ahead and take the finale. Las Vegas starter Stolmy Pimentel allowed a titanic shot from Reed with Danny Worth on 1B in the 1st, but was otherwise strong against Fresno. The 51s had Grizzlies starter Mike Hauschild on the ropes in both the 1st and 2nd innings, but they’d manage only 1 run while stranding 5 runners on base early. Hauschild then settled in to give the Grizzlies 7 great innings, and his bullpen did just enough to hang on for a Fresno win.
Hauschild struck out Matt Reynolds and Johnny Monell twice each over the first 2.1 IP, and there were two runners on base for 3 of those strikeouts. He featured a nice forkball, and would get better as he settled into the start. Dilson Herrera had a nice day at the plate and in the field, until some 9th inning strangeness spoiled the 51s final comeback chance (see below). Brandon Nimmo had a hit in his first AB, reached base 3 times, and was sharp in CF, tracking some deep fly balls down with time to spare. Erik Goeddel was a little wild when he entered during the 7th inning, and Fresno was able to tack on an extra run with him on the mound (charged to Chase Huchingson).
I break this game down further with highlights below, so enjoy! Las Vegas travelled to Sacramento after this game, where they’ll start a 4-game series with the River Cats. The game is scheduled for 10:05 PM, and Seth Lugo will be looking to repeat his performance from last week against this team.

Scoring Highlights

Dilson Herrera and Brandon Nimmo started the game with singles off Fresno starter Mike Hauschild, but Las Vegas would leave the bases loaded with 0 runs scored in the 1st inning.

Danny Worth had a big day for Fresno, raising his average to .472 by going 3-3 with a walk and double. He picked up his first hit in the 1st, and then scored on a mammoth homerun off the bat of top Astros prospect A.J. Reed. Worth added an RBI double in the 3rd and a seeing eye single in the 5th.

Gavin Cecchini led off the 2nd with a single into CF, and then came around to score on Dilson’s second hit in as many innings.

The 51s loaded the bases with 3 walks in the 8th inning, and Roger Bernadina came through with the two run single that made this a 4-3 game.

Ty Kelly led off the 9th with a single into RF, but Dilson would bunt into a double play that ended any threat. He was bunting for a hit, but for the sake of the narrative, we can just blame Wally – even he must realize that it’s a bad idea to call for a bunt with one of your best hitters while trailing in the 9th inning. Dilson was nearly out of the box as he appears to make contact with the pitch, which left his bat in the path of the ball after it bounced off the ground. I think he realized there was double contact and would stop running to 1B, but it was barely deflected, so the umps did not see or call it.

Defensive Highlights

Dilson Herrera made an excellent play ranging to his left in the 3rd inning, getting Andrew Aplin by a hair at 1B.
