Recapish
Robert
Gsellman’s strong start to the 2016 season continued Friday night in Erie, as
he tossed 6.2 innings of one run ball while the B-Mets offense exploded behind
him. Erie starter Tommy collier held the B-Mets in check over the first 3 innings,
but then Matt Oberste sparked a pair of multi-run innings by reaching to lead
off the 3rd (double) and 4th (walk). Gsellman would just
get stronger as the night went on, and only failed to finish 7 innings because
it’s still April and he had reached 95 pitches in AA. Logan Taylor and Kelly
Secrest had to work around some trouble for the final 7 outs, but the
Binghamton lead was more than enough to absorb the damage.
The bottom of the order carried the
load for Binghamton, with Stefan Sabol, Xorge Carrillo, and Kyle Johnson
combining for 7 hits, including 4 doubles and a long bomb to LF by Xorge.
Dominic Smith had a very rough night at the plate, swinging through 3 strike three’s
with runners on base – once on a fastball, and twice on breaking balls diving
into the dirt. Gsellman was sitting 90-93 per the Erie analytics
guy, though no word if he touched 98 MPH again. Sitting 95-98 would be
nice, but touching 98 once is not that interesting to be honest, and Gsellman
was sitting 92-93 in some starts last year per the MiLB.tv broadcasters. He was
sitting at the knees with his fastball when he wanted to, but he may have been
getting some help from the ump (or Xorge) on the edges.
I break this game down in more
detail below, so enjoy! This series continues in Erie Saturday, with Tyler Pill scheduled to pitch for Binghamton and a 1:35 start time expected.
Scoring Highlights
Matt
Oberste picked up his first hit of the game leading off the 2nd, but
he’d be stranded at 1B. It was a pure luck single, as he hit a very high pop up
behind the 2B bag that was knocked around by the wind and fell right next to an
Erie infielder.
Kyle
Johnson led off the 3rd with his first double of the night, but he’d
be stranded at 2B.
The
B-Mets finally broke through in the 4th, when Oberste doubled to
leadoff the inning. After Victor Cruzado drew his first of 3 walks, Stefan
Sabol hit a liner down the RF line that would go for a ground-rule double. The
ball bounced around near some members of the bullpen, and the umpire eventually
agreed with the Erie outfielder that it should be a ground-rule double – Sabol
initially ran all the way around the bases just in case. Xorge Carrillo then
launched a three run blast to LF that gave the B-Mets a 4-1 lead.
Binghamton
would load the bases with 0 outs in the 5th inning thanks to 3
straight walks, but a Xorge Carrillo GIDP would limit the damage in the frame.
They’d score one run on that play, and then another when Kyle Johnson picked up
his second double of the game.
Johnson
picked up another RBI in the 7th, this time for walking with the
bases loaded to bring home Cruzado. Cruzado had also walked, and then Sabol and
Carrillo followed with singles to load the bases.
Xorge
added a double in the 9th inning.
Defensive Highlights
Derrik
Gibson made a few more nice plays, and I still think he should play SS over
Niuman Romero until Amed Rosario is ready (if they won’t play Jeff McNeil
there). Romero had another bad day in the field.
Robert
Gsellman’s low effort delivery leaves him in a good position to field his
position, which helped him make a few nice plays Friday night.
Xorge
Carrillo’s great night extended into the field, where he threw a runner out to
end the 2nd inning.

*7.4% Swinging strike rate
First pitch strike to 18/25 batters faced (72%)
Gsellman
worked around a couple of groundball singles allowed in the 1st
inning, inducing a double play groundout to end the frame.
A
leadoff walk to Dominic Ficociello would burn Gsellman in the 2nd.
Austin Green would double home the first run of the game two batters later.
He
would work clean frames in the 3rd and 4th inning,
striking out a batter in each frame:
Tyler Bortnick swinging in the 3rd
Ficociello swinging in the 4th
Gsellman
induced 4 groundballs in the 5th, with one of them finding their way
into CF for a single.
After
working a clean 6th inning, Gsellman went back out for the 7th
with only 76 pitches thrown. Unfortunately, some long AB’s and an unconverted
double play left him one out shy of 7 innings for the night.
Logan Taylor
Taylor
came in and struck out Harold Castro to end the 7th inning.
