Recapish
The
Binghamton Mets got back to .500 and earned a split in their rain-shortened
series against Harrisburg Wednesday night, finishing their shortened home stand
on a positive note. Rainy Lara is in his third season with the B-Mets, and he
knows how to work a Double-A lineup at this point. He worked around trouble in
multiple innings, and ultimately held Harrisburg scoreless for 5 innings while
his team jumped ahead 2-0. After a forgettable
night at the plate from Dominic Smith and the rest of the lineup in their
loss Tuesday night, the B-Mets received a big performance from Dom in this
game. B-Mets manager Pedro Lopez let a pair of lefties – Kelly Secrest and
David Roseboom – handle most of the work out of the pen, only calling on righty
Beck Wheeler when Secrest got into trouble during the 8th.
Xorge Carrillo and Maikis De La
Cruz picked up back-to-back doubles for a run in the 2nd inning, and
it was the second straight game with a double for both players. L.J. Mazzilli
had his hands in everything for Binghamton: he singled to move Johnson over in
the 3rd, and KJ would eventually come around to score; he brought
home a run with a sac fly; and he had a great night in the field. Johnson also
had a big game for Binghamton, scoring that run and doubling home an insurance
run in the 7th.
I break this game down more below, so
enjoy. The B-Mets start their first road trip Thursday in Erie. The game is
scheduled to start at 6:35 PM, and Mickey Jannis is the expected starter for
Binghamton.
Scoring Highlights
Derrik
Gibson led off the 2nd inning with a single grounded sharply back up
the middle, but he’d be erased when Stefan Sabol grounded into a double play.
That loomed large when Xorge Carrillo and Maikis De La Cruz followed with
back-to-back doubles for a 1-0 lead – it could’ve been more.
Kyle
Johnson and L.J. Mazzilli hit back-to-back singles leading off the 3rd
inning. It looked like the B-Mets were primed for a big inning, but they’d have
to trade a run for a double play from Niuman Romero. Dominic Smith followed
with a single to LF, his second hit of the year.
Smith
picked up his first legal extra base hit of the season in the 6th,
but the next 3 B-Mets batters went down swinging. Smith had previously doubled
in a game this past weekend, but he never touched the 1B bag on his way to 2B,
and the appeal play got him.
Maikis
and pinch-hitting Matt Oberste would lead off the 7th with walks,
and then both came around to score. Johnson doubled home Maikis, and Mazzilli
brought home Oberste with a sac fly.
Defensive Highlights
L.J.
Mazzilli turned in 3 nice plays at 2B Wednesday night: starting a double play
in the 1st, diving to apply the tag for the third out before a
runner came home in the 3rd, and then showing nice range on a
grounder up the middle in the 7th.
