Recap
The
Fireflies were involved in another walkoff Friday night, and since both of
their games this year have come on the road, that’s not a good thing. The
Fireflies got a strong start from lefty P.J. Conlon, but couldn’t pull away
against RiverDogs starter Will Carter. Carter allowed four straight two out
singles in the 1st, but was otherwise in control, racking up 7 K’s
over his 5 innings. The RiverDogs bullpen came in and did a great job behind
Will Carter, while Christian Montgomery came in for the Fireflies and struggled
with command throughout his 1.1 IP. Columbia would pull even when Charleston
reliever Anyelo Gomez tired in the top of the 9th, but then Witt
Haggard quickly gave the lead back in the bottom of the 9th.
Conlon
is a self-described crafty
lefty, which is a nice way of admitting he has below average velocity. At
one point the Charleston announcer called an 87 MPH offspeed pitch from Conlon,
but then realized he needed to correct that to fastball. His fastball showed a
lot of nice arm side run throughout the night, and his secondaries flashed some
nice late movement.
Christian Montgomery didn’t have
great command Friday night, but also was a bit unlucky. Kyle Holder hit a
triple into RF that bounced off the 1B bag, which opened the door for a big 6th
inning. Tyler Moore made a bad throw into CF for an error, which allowed Connor
Spencer to walk home from 3B and Thairo Estrada to move to 3B. Moore also
dropped a pop up in foul territory that would’ve ended the 5th
inning quicker. The walks, the double, and the wild pitches were on him though.
Tyler Bashlor was pitching for the
first time since August 2013 and was tremendous. He induced 8 swinging strikes
(21.6%), and struck out 5 of 6 batters at one point. His fastball looked great,
so I’ll try to update this with a velocity report later, but check out some GIF’s
below.
Columbia would battle back with 2
key two out hits in the 9th, but Witt Haggard struggled with command
in the bottom half of the frame. He’d retire Trey Amburgey to start the frame,
but then allowed a double to right center, and a well struck ‘single’ into CF
for the game winner.
The Fireflies will try for their
first ever win against Saturday evening at 6:05 PM, with Thomas McIlraith
scheduled to pitch for Columbia.
Scoring Highlights
Vinny
Siena sparked a two out rally in the 1st inning with a single lined
into CF. Dash Winningham would move him to 3B when he ripped a single into RF.
David Thompson followed with an RBI single to put the Fireflies on the board.
J.C. Rodriguez would keep the singles party going with an RBI single lined into
CF.
Ivan
Wilson reached on an infield single and nearly hit a homerun out to right
center field, settling instead for a double.
David
Thompson led off the 9th with a double ripped into the LF corner.
With two outs and Anyelo Gomez tiring, Vicente Lupo hit a laser into the LF
corner to bring Thompson home and knock out the reliever. Next up was Ramos,
who hadn’t had the best game to that point, but came through with a huge single
lined just out of the reach of Kyle Holder.
Defensive Highlights
Milton
Ramos committed his first error of the season, putting a little bit too much on
this throw to 1B. The RiverDogs also reached on a pair of infield singles to
him, but the balls were so softly hit that he had almost no chance.
David
Thompson handled this grounder nicely in the 9th.

P.J. didn’t pick up any strikeouts,
but here some action of him from the night.
Christian Montgomery
Montgomery came in to finish the 5th
inning, but found himself in trouble after a wild pitch and a walk put runners
on the corners with two outs. Fortunately he’d strike out Chris Gittens to end
the threat.
The RiverDogs would score 3 against
Montgomery in the 6th, but he finished the frame with a strikeout of
Hoy Jun Park.
Tyler Bashlor
Bashlor came in for the 7th
inning and was very strong. He’d allow a leadoff single to Trey Amburgey, but
then struck out 5 of the next 6 batters:
Chris Gittens swinging.
Jhalan Jackson swinging.
Kyle Holder looking.
Connor Spencer swinging.
And after a walk to Thairo Estrada, Eduardo Navas swinging.
Will Carter
The
Yankees pitcher would settle down to have a strong start after a rough 1st
inning. He finished with 7 K’s:
Kevin Kaczmarski went down looking in the 1st
inning. (Not shown)
Vicente Lupo, Milton Ramos, and Ivan Wilson went down in
order in the 2nd inning.
David Thompson was struck out in the 4th inning.
Lupo and Ramos went down swinging to start the 5th
inning.
