Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies battled back to clinch the series win against Greenville
Saturday, scoring 5 runs in the 9th to surge ahead.
Cola starter Tyler Badamo struggled
with command in the 1st inning, and the Drive touched him up for a
pair of runs on two doubles and two walks. Badamo would settle in after that,
allowing only one run over his final 5.2 IP Saturday night, and facing just one
over the minimum until Greenville rallied for their third run in the 6th.
Per John Calvagno – he writes
a great blog called Notes From The
Sally that you should open in a new tab for when you’re done here ;) –
Badamo was 87-90 MPH with his fastball, and mixed in a low-80’s slurve and
changeup. He called it a slurve because it looks like curve (see below),
but is thrown at slider speed (81-83, which is curve territory for some hard
throwers).
Drive starter Anderson Espinoza is
one of the top young starting prospects in the game, and he flashed why in this
start, but the Fireflies patient hitters took advantage of his rawness. He
issued three walks and the Fireflies ran his pitch count up to 74 in the 4th,
when Vicente Lupo knocked him out with an RBI double. He was throwing a heavy
diet of sinkers, which he throws with a lot of arm-side run, and sat 92-90 MPH per
Calvagno.
Vinny Siena would add an sac fly in
the 7th and the game-tying hit in the 9th, and then Jeff
Diehl hit a moon shot over the Mini-Monster in LF to cap the scoring in the 9th
– Tucker Tharp had the go-ahead RBI single. Dash Winningham and Ivan Wilson
each added a pair of hits, with Wilson ripping a double off the Mini-Monster
(see below).
Seth Davis struck out Chad De La
Guerra after entering in a key situation during the 7th inning, and
he’d face just one over the minimum while dominating Greenville for the final
2.1 IP.
I
break this game down further with highlights below, so enjoy! This series wraps
up Sunday afternoon, with Joe Shaw looking to continue his dominant start and
help the Fireflies sweep.
Scoring Highlights
Joseph
Monge hit a leadoff double for Greenville in the 1st, and then
Michael Chavis doubled him home two batters later. Chavis would come around to
score on a wild pitch.
Milton
Ramos picked up the Fireflies first hit with two outs in the 2nd.
Vinny
Siena extended his on base streak to 17 straight games to start the season with
a one out single in the 3rd. He’d steal 2B in the frame, but be
stranded there.
Jeff
Diehl walked leading off the 4th inning and then came around to
score on a double off the bat of Vicente Lupo.
Dash
Winningham picked up his first hit of the game when he singled leading off the
6th inning.
Josh
Ockimey hit a one out single into CF in the 6th inning, but would be
erased from the base paths on a fielder’s choice. Luis Alexander Basabe
followed with an RBI double off the RF wall, but would be thrown out trying to
stretch his hit into a triple.
Ivan
Wilson led off the 7th with a double to LF and then scored on a sac
fly from Vinny Siena, which made it a 3-2 game.
Winningham’s
second hit of the game came leading off the 8th, and then the
Fireflies sent Tucker Tharp in to pinch run for him.
Ramos
was hit by a pitch leading off the 9th inning, and would advance to
2B on Wilson’s second hit of the night. Vinny Siena tied the game up with an
RBI single to LF two batters later, and then Tucker Tharp gave Columbia a 4-3
lead with an RBI single of his own two more batters later. Jeff Diehl capped
the scoring with a long 3R homerun over the mini-monster in LF.
Defensive Highlights
Vicente
Lupo went for the sliding catch in the 1st inning.
The
camera didn’t stick with the throw to 1B, but the Fireflies turned this double
play behind Badamo in the 2nd inning. Milton Ramos didn't have a chance to make any flashy plays, but he showed off his arm a few times, like here in the fifth.

*11.1% Swinging strike rate
First pitch strike to 19/28 batters faced (68%)
Badamo
allowed a pair of doubles and a pair of walks in the 1st inning, but
then settled down to provide a very strong start. He struck out Trent Kemp
leading off the 2nd inning for his first K of the game.
Chad
De La Guerra struck out swinging for the first out of the 3rd inning.
After
allowing a leadoff double to Kyri Washington in the 4th, Badamo
retired the next 3 Drive batters, picking up another strikeout of Kemp to
strand Kyri at 3B.
Badamo
worked a clean 5th inning, finishing the frame with another
strikeout of De La Guerra.
After
allowing a leadoff single and one out walk in the 7th, Badamo would
strikeout Joseph Monge before departing – always nice to leave on a high note (they didn't show strike 3).
Seth Davis
Seth Davis came into a two on, two outs situation, and he’d add another strikeout of De La Guerra to escape the jam.
Davis
added another strikeout of Luis Alexander Basabe to end the 8th, and
was overall pretty dominant. He issued a two out walk in the 8th,
but retired the other 7 batters to face him, inducing 3 pop outs and a pair of
groundouts to go along with the two strikeouts.
Anderson Espinoza
Espinoza
started the game with a strikeout of J.C. Rodriguez, and worked around a walk
for a clean 1st inning.
Tyler
Moore and Vicente Lupo would go down on strikes consecutively in the 2nd
inning, as Espinoza work around another walk and a two out single.
Espinoza’s
final strikeout came against David Thompson in the 3rd inning
