Recapish

The Columbia Fireflies and Greenville Drive found themselves locked in an intense SAL slugfest Thursday night during the series opener. The teams combined for 14 runs between the top of the 2nd and the top of the 5th innings, but Columbia saved the best for last. Neither starter stood out in this game, but the Fireflies defense made things harder for McIlraith in the 2nd than it needed to be. Christian Montgomery and Alex Palsha both picked up 5 K’s in relief, but the defense again faltered behind Montgomery in the 7th, and Greenville held a 9-8 lead heading into the 9th. Sparked by the final hits of the night from Ivan Wilson, Vinny Siena, David Thompson, and Dash Winningham, the Fireflies exploded for five 9th inning runs, which catapulted them ahead 13-9.
I break this game down in more detail below, so enjoy! There would normally be more here, but there were 3 games worth covering Thursday night, so I’m leaving it to the other sections to tell the story. This series continues Friday night at 7:05 PM, with Kevin Canelon scheduled to pitch for the Fireflies.

Scoring Highlights

David Thompson sparked the 2nd inning rally with a leadoff single. He went to 3B went Dash Winningham pulled a double to the RF wall. Thompson finally came around to score when Jeff Diehl followed with a single, and Dash came home one batter later on a sac fly from Tyler Moore.

Josh Ockimey led off the 2nd inning with his 4th homerun of the year.

Ivan Wilson led off the 3rd with a double to LF. Kevin Kaczmarski and Vinny Siena would then hit consecutive singles to bring Wilson around and take back the lead for Columbia. Thompson added an RBI single later in the frame to make that lead 4-2.

Chad De La Guerra drew a one out walk in the 3rd, and then Michael Chavis and Josh Ockimey followed with singles to bring him home for a run.

Jeff Diehl led off the 4th by ripping a line drive into the LF corner, but he’d be thrown out trying to extend his hit into a double. Tyler Moore followed with a single to RF, and then Ivan Wilson went deep for the first time in 2016 two batters later – “there’s no way the ballpark is handling that one” was the announcer’s immediate reaction.

Vinny Siena led off the 5th inning with his 6th double of the year. He’d score two batters later when David Thompson continued his great night with a single into CF. Thompson would then score all the way from 1B on another double from Dash, this one to the LF wall. The last GIF shown in this section is Dash's deep fly out to CF from his previous AB.

Siena added a single in the 7th, but would be stranded at 2B.

Ivan Wilson sparked the Fireflies game-winning rally with a leadoff double to CF in the 9th inning. He’d come around to score on a bunt single/E1 from Tucker Tharp when the pitcher threw the ball away. Siena followed with his second double of the night, bringing home Tharp from 2B. Joe Tuschak, Thompson, and Dash connected for 3 more singles, pushing the Fireflies total to 20 for the night, and leading to 3 more runs.

Defensive Highlights

Dash made a couple of mistakes in the field during this one, but he also made a nice choice to start a double play in the 2nd.

Milton Ramos was hardly tested, but he looked good on this slow grounder.

Vinny Siena made a nice diving stop on a ball to his right for the last out of the game.

There weren’t many highlights for McIlraith in this start, so I’m only sharing a few of his pitches in this section. His 1st inning was great, and he started the night with a strikeout of Joseph Monge, but he’d be hit hard over the next 3 frames.

Christian Montgomery

Montgomery took over in the 4th with runners on the corners and one out and escaped the jam by inducing two groundouts. He’d retire the first 8 batters to face him, picking up a pair of strikeouts in both the 5th and 6th innings:
Tate Matheny and Luis Alexander Basabe swinging in the 5th.

Kyri Washington and Monge in the 6th.

Things got weird behind Montgomery in the 7th, and he’d end up leaving with a runner on 2B and only one out, but he’d strikeout Basabe one more time before leaving.

Alex Palsha

Palsha took over and struck out Austin Rei and Washington to finish the 7th.

He worked around a leadoff single allowed in the 8th, striking out Monge and De La Guerra to finish the frame.

Ockimey drew a one out walk against Palsha in the 9th, but Palsha would get the next two to finish the game, striking out Tate Matheny along the way.
