Recapish
The
Binghamton Mets picked up their third straight win by coming out on the right
side of a pitcher’s duel with Portland Tuesday night. Andrew Barbosa and Teddy
Stankiewicz both proved toughed to square up, but the one-time Mets draft pick
had bouts of wildness that came back to hurt him. Dominic Smith had 2/3 of the
B-Mets hits, and brought home the go ahead run with an RBI single off a lefty
in the 8th.
Barbosa
doesn’t throw hard – his fastball sits mid-80’s – but he has huge separation
between his fastball and offspeed stuff, which can drop into the 60’s. His
control and that velocity gap have helped him keep AA and AAA batters off
balance a lot early in the season, and it helped him to 18 swinging strikes
Tuesday night. He’d be taken out after reaching 100 pitches with one out and
nobody on base in the 8th. He probably could’ve gone all 9 in this
one if given the chance, but it was a cold April night and he’s still
stretching out, so there was no reason to let him go further.
He
was pure dominance over the first 3 innings, retiring all 9 batters on 4 K’s, 3
pop outs, and two groundouts. The B-Mets jumped ahead with a run in the 3rd,
but Portland picked up the games first hit with a leadoff single from Henry
Ramos in the 4th. Ramos would steal 2B, but then Barbosa K’d two in
a row before a fly out to LF ended the inning. He worked a perfect 5th,
but then suddenly found himself behind 2-1 after allowing an RBI double to
Bryce Brentz with two outs in the 6th. Binghamton would get that run
right back, and then Barbosa responded with his best inning of the night,
striking out the side in the 7th on 14 pitches.
Akeel
Morris came in and retired the final five Portland batters in a row. The last
two batters offered at 5 of his pitches and all 5 swings results in whiffs. After
struggling with command last week, it appears that Akeel Morris has his swag
back!
I
review the scoring details with highlights below, so enjoy! This series wraps
up Wednesday evening at 6:35 PM, with Tyler Pill (0-2, 6.32 ERA) scheduled to
take the hill for Binghamton. Pill is looking to build upon a strong
start in his last outing, while the B-Mets are looking to get back to .500
at 9-9.
Scoring Highlights
The
B-Mets scored a run in the 3rd without the benefit of a hit. L.J.
Mazzilli led off the frame with a walk. He went to 2B on a wild pitch, and then
scored on a throwing error by Portland’s starter.
Dominic
Smith picked up his first hit with a single in the 4th.
Kyle
Johnson would reach on a HBP with one out in the 6th and then come
around to score without a hit. He stole 2B and then scored on a groundout.
The
B-Mets finally picked up an RBI hit for the go-ahead run in the 8th
inning. Johnson led off with a walk, went to 2B on a sac bunt, and then scored
on Smith’s second hit of the game.
Defensive Highlights
Xorge
Carrillo was quick to react to this slow grounder in front of the plate during
the 5th, but he was patient approaching it since he knew he had time
with who was running (1B Tim Roberson).
